Not exactly a full size ship but I thought people might be interested in this unusual bridge which is situated at the eastern end of the four mile Corinth Canal which separates mainland Greece from the Peloponnese.

We are used to seeing lifting bridges and swing bridges etc. but this is a sinking bridge and takes just a few minutes to go up or down. It carries two single roadways and a central pedestrian walkway. We had lunch in a Taverna overlooking the bridge and saw it cycle several times. Quite fascinating.

That's quite remarkable, Colin. I've seen plenty of lifting bridges, but never a sinking one.

Colin……..You had me fooled there, for a few minutes!

When I first saw your post, I assumed the bridge sank downwards from up high!

What a clever solution to the problem though?

But, how long will the system work in sea water?

Not to worry………It's fail safe anyway

Bob, the bridges (there are two) were apparently constructed in 1988. I think all the working gubbins is above water so it is just a steel and wood platform being lowered and raised. It didn't seem rusty when I had a look at it. As you say, it's failsafe!
