        Afternoon all,
I am thinking of adding a bit more realism to my boat (see pics on steam section of forum) and think a few bags of coal in one corner of the engine compartment would like quite good. I would obviously use real coal, breaking up a lump of it into small bits but have no idea what to use as bags…I have seen some excellent models on the internet that have holds ‘filled’ with coal – the coal is visible under hatch boards that have been removed but nothing that would provide ideas for bags!
I was thinking something along the lines of getting some hessian or similar, making some bags to the appropriate scale and smearing it with coal dust to add some realistic colour, however if anyone has any other ideas, some help would be appreciated!

Peter. I think a browse through a few Model Railways books should furnish you with these sorts of answers, after all, steam engines use a lot of coal!  There are any number dealing with layouts and detailing. Must be an answer in there somewhere.

If not, you would need some scale hessian, and a visit to a large fabric shop should furnish you with something of a weave suitable. Dye it with tea and away you go.

Thanks Ashley, will explore that avenue further. getting the hessian shouldn’t be a problem, making it look good is a bit more challenging!

Thanks Len, as long as they aren’t the pyramid shaped ones, that could work!
