I have what I believed was a 42” Fairey Huntsman which has been languishing in various garages of mine since I was about 15 years old. It’s in a bit of a sorry state. But now some 40+ years later, and with all this free time that has been thrust upon many of us, I would like a bash at restoring it to its former glory.
Having browsed through some of the topics in this forum and looking at some of the super models that have been built I think my Huntsman is actually a Huntress!
It was originally a Christmas gift from my Father in 1977 and it came to me as an unfinished shell. I completed the build and fitted it out with a Merco 35 water-cooled glow plug engine, and I used a Sanwa 2-Channel RC set.
It used to have quite a turn of speed and I’m fairly sure it used to plane.
I still have the Merco engine which is invariably seized after such a long period of inactivity. However, from what I’ve read on this and other forums it appears that IC engines are persona non-gratis on most local ponds and lakes. Fair enough really when I recall how much of an oil slick my boat used to leave behind it!
Things have obviously moved on a bit since my days of model making and I’m looking for some advice on an appropriate electric motor, battery set, and prop type to to replace the original IC engine. It would be good to get it going like it used to with the Merco 35. As mentioned it’s 42” (107cm) in length and weighs 4.45Kg in its stripped out state.
I’ve read through a few of the topics on this forum and I’m still a bit confused to be honest. Brushed vs Brushless motors, Battery Balancing packs etc… Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Alan
