Please don't take this as absolute gospel as I have not read the official documents and am not an expert in the technology. However I understand, from a knowledgeable person at work, that the EU have some new regulations affecting 2.4 GHz radio systems that came into force on 1st January this year.

Equipment that complies with the new requirements is not compatible with equipment to the old standard. Effectively if you go out and buy a new receiver, it may not work with your old transmitter and vice versa. There is nothing to stop you using the old equipment, but the EU will not allow the import of any more equipment to the old standard after the start of this year.

Apparently suppliers have been aware of this situation for some time but did not expect it to apply to relatively low power model radio systems. Unfortunately the bureaucrats decided differently. Some manufacturers are coming up with fixes to modify old equipment to the new standard but it will still not be possible, for example, to have a receiver that will work with both. The fix might be embodied by an owner applied software update or might need equipment to be returned to the supplier for modification.

As a further effect I also understand that Spectrum DSM 2 equipment cannot be modified to meet the new requirements and will therefore no longer be imported into the EU.

How this will all pan out I have no idea but the scope for buying incompatible gear seems to have been significantly increased. If any one has any more detailed knowledge of the situation, let us know. If you are thinking of spending money on a new system in the near future, do your homework before parting with your cash.

Yes, Gareth you have it right.

The new EU regulations EN 300 328 v 1.8.1 cover all aspects of 2.4GHz use where ever it's found. Quite what will be changed in terms of our gear I do not know. The regs cover everything including testing and 'spectrum equality of use' whatever that means.

We'll wait and see what our suppliers start saying, after all, they've known about this change since the spring of last year, so expect lots of offers to clear old stock, and if buying ask about the above regulations and does your intended new kit meet it. There should be a claim on the packaging.

Compatibility of 2.4 gHz systems is manufacturer dependent anyway. Spektrum DSM2 isn't particularly good but seems to work OK despite its technical drawbacks (it picks 2 free channels at switch on and doesn't change). I think DSM2 receivers are obsolete anyway

I use FrsSky 2.4 gHz radio gear which frequency hops all the time. On my Taranis transmitter it has a European setting which (I think) just limits the output power. Early Spektrum transmitters will only work with DSM2 receivers but later ones will work with either DSM2 or DSMX. However, I think there's a software update that corrects that.

Anyway there's a long thread here if anyone wants more details:

I have just bought an extra AR400 RX for my Spektrum DX5i. They were scarce at one point but there seem to be a few more about now. Usually they are around the £26 mark but I got one from Ebay (new) for £17.99 free post.
