I was to say the least inspired by the glynn guest free plan in last aug MB. and having built it wanted to design and build my own with a slightly more rounded hull.

Having aquired the book that glynn had used for his inspiration I picked a classic looking vessel from its pages to recreate.

The SS Vikingen displays all the characteristics of a turn of the century 1900, coastal steamer and so from the information contained in the book I fed all the relevent data into my 3D ship design proggramme (Delph ship) and came up with the following hull shape

from which I drew the 2D plans

the plan is to construct it from Glass fibre using my favoured method of using thickcard frames, a ply keel and thin card planking under a grp skin

          Hello Phil

Keep up the good work!……………..and need I add?………..take your time,  it`s gonna be a long winter!

            Absolutely Bob

However I would like to sail this one in sept at the funsail I’ve got organised on our local ponds and I’m cheating a little here the hull is actually nearly done and the superstructure also is near completion.

On top of which I have a tug in the pipe line for winter hopefully a realy powerfull beast with two 45A low reving brushless motors turning big props in cort nozzles

Not at all Bob I’ve got the fast electric boys at sedgemoor club sorting a motor as they reckon they can get it a lot cheaper and looking at someof their boats go they’ve got ALL the right info so fingers crossed it’ll make a debut at the sept sailing too.

Right on with the progress the photo’s say it all really so I’ll shut up!!!

1st all the frames cut and ready and a start on the superstructure components

The motor mount/prop tube combo was especiall produced by mmb for this vessel final drive is via a belt drive and so the motor mount is adjustable

All the card planks on and balsa infills at bow and stern

A coat of filler applied to smooth things out

So next job is to sand the filler down and get a coat of primer on then cut the hull from the base board seal inside then fit the servo shelf and the deck

                  My, my, Phil!……………..You`re working quickly!…..wink….wink…lol

I like the truly horizontal propshaft and the forward planning of this model!…..and the belt drive should look very businesslike

I should imagine, the novel hull construction, will keep the share prices up for body filler companies!

Keep up the good work, matey!

                    Thanks Bob!

In fact there’s not really that much filler on her at max its only 1 mm thick. I use it to smooth over the steps caused by the tissue strip overlap as it saves rubbing to much resin of thus helping to maintain full strength without to much fibreglass. And it takes up slight inperfections in the line of the hull.

That prop shaft and motor mount combo really is a quality item the propshaft is all stainless (including the tube) with maintenance free PTFE bearings and is only 6mm OD for a 4mm shaft.

The rudder is in a similar tube with a stainless shaft and brass blade riveted in once again a quality item.

Quite a bit of progress since I last posted and the WIP pics say it all really

Still got some railings to make, lifeboats and davits to fit and lots of painting to do.

However it’ll be a week or so before the life boats and esc/bec arrive so it’s a case of, “steady as she goes, if you please No1”.

You`ve made an excellent job of your latest project!

It looks very neat and tidy and so quick too!……..I suspect, you`ve been employing Santa`s Elves during out of season?

Thankyou Bob. re santa’s elves, their so good at toy making it seemed a shame not too. so my secrets out

I got some of the painting and some of the railing done today

Also I had her in the er Domestic test tank, and used 575g of lead all cast by me into 25g blocks that fit in the bilges between the frames to get them as low as possible

Thats a lot of lead for a 600mm boat but then with all that superstructure up high it needs something to keep her upright. The Noggsund a similar size vessel but flat bottomed used 800g so I reckon I’ve done well.

That really is it till the end of the week as I’m all out of superglue, epoxy and copper wire for the remaining railings/davits, also I need to get the white paint for the decks.

Hi Larry yes indeed! we met at Shepton mallet a bit back. Hope your well.

                              the cad I’m using at present is;

for the 3D designing a programme called “delphship” a basic, but usable version of which is available as a free download. this down load comes with a 73 page instruction manual that you can print.

For the more traditional 2D drawings I’m using a programme called “solid edge 2D” once again a basic version is available as a free download.

The professional versions of both these programmes are not that pricey though.

For the 3D prog there’s a fully functional one on sale on Ebay at silly cheap prices, it works differently to “delphship” and I can’t vouch for it but at less than a tenner what have you got to lose?

as for easy to use well thats like asking how long is piece of string  lets just say I’ve known harder programmes to master.

                                Hello Larry and Phil

I find my Autocad programme very useful for designing almost anything!

                                The kitchen layout…..a dog compound…..Slo Mo mechanics……..rudder mechs….motor drives etc….

Phils latest project looks lovely on Cad……..one of the main features of Cad is it`s accuracy and ability to make changes etc

It is tricky at first, but is quite simple when you get into it!

                                    Hi lads!

Larry Be prepared to make a lot of mistakes and don’t be frightened to scrap it and try again. My 1st attempts with Delftship were frustrating to say the least

don’t try to use too many points on the control net at 1st or you will end up confusing your self. keep it simple at 1st. always though allow an extra set of points at the stern to close it up as it defaults to an open stern.

Also don’t confuse stations with control points.

                                    Stations

are basically the outlines of the frames.

Buttocks are vertical lines drawn through the length of the hull and
waterlines are just that horizontal lines drawn through the length  of the hull
control points are the points on the control net where (if it were a fish net) the knots would be
Edges are the lines that join the control points and form the control net.

Finally print and use the manual. I printed mine at A5 so 2 pages went on an A4 sheet and used booklet printing to give 4 pages to an A4 sheet (2 front and 2 back) and they fold into a small book

I’ve sorted the deck painting and apart fromthe electronics there’s just a few details to finish.

Maybe she looks just a little to tidy

However the weathering if any can wait this one needs to be on show at honiton hill on aug bank holiday.

The life boats arrived this morning from my good friend Mark at MMB so she’s finished with the exception of the esc which Dave at Action electronics put in the post on Fri.

all the photo’s are now in my album so just a couple to wet your appetite

So hopefully weather permitting its of to the pond on Tues or wed and a video of her sailing should follow that. This has been an interesting build taken, as it was, in such a short time from the 3D cad to completion. my thanks go to both Mark at MMB and Dave at Action electronics for their invaluable help in designing the running gear and electronics.

One last post before taking her for a test sail.

The esc/bec combo from Action electronics is fitted and I have to say what a quality bit of kit it is. using an old AM 27Mhz set to set up and test, with a questionable pulse width, and the fine motor control is astounding.

The switch I had to fit myself

The dab of red paint indicates the “on” position

All nice and tidy where she was designed to be

Now a quick vid of the motor test note how slowly one can start it

                                                      Hi Larry and thanks.

The passengers and crew were rescued from the Noggsund, after she was knocked from a table at a pond side meeting by a runnaway tent. Unfortunately the damage was substantial and so this one was born to replace her. I’ll stand correction on this but, I believe this hull will be a big improvement, certainly easier to trim and ballast. and not a lot harder, if any, to build.
