After a lapse of about two years, and endless encouragement from my model boating friends, I`ve finally decided to build the Graupner PS Glasgow…….And I like paddlers

I needed something to occupy my mind over the next few months.

The first picture, as a bit of fun, shows the parcel outside the front door, delivered this morning……And I like parcels too!

This will not be a blow by blow description, just work in progress reports every now and then….or if something needs a discussion etc

Oooops! The PC is having a senior moment, or I am!…… can`t find the picture!

Gosh Bob, who's in there…? The Mummy Returns!

Good luck with the build, we will all follow it with interest.

              Thank you, Colin

Now then, what`s in the box?

I was very pleased with the contents and the very neat packaging and consider this a fine start!……Pity I didn`t order the various glues required!

The feathering paddle wheels look interesting!

              I love tricky mechanisms!

Can anyone recommend a reliable glue for bonding wood to ABS, please?

Reading all the horror stories on the subject, I'm tempted to use PVA with a well scuffed surface?

                  Try an epoxy like Araldite.

                    Hello Paul

i would have said that, but elsewhere, they say it doesn't work too well?

                    Hence the question

We'll wait for a few more suggestions

                    Bob

                      Bob

Araldite has never let me down but if you are worried about failure you could use a construction grade two pack system such as Hilti or Loctite (expensive but very effective)

For myself if Araldite wont hold a joint I either revert to a mechanical fixing or redesign the joint.

Its nice to see you building again and I am looking forward to the progress reports. Have you chosen an engine yet and if not can I put a vote in for steam then we can see what a true engineer can do with bits of metal.

Don't Graupner always recommend their Stabilit Express for joints like these?

                          Yes they do!

Only just spotted that in the miniscule instructions…..With a magnifying glass!

I`ve never heard of that glue, so assumed it was only available in Germany, like I said earlier…..Should have ordered it with the kit!

Thanks for your advice on the glue stuff

Don`t fancy the aggro of steam, having seen my fellow club members messing about with their stuff!

Think two geared 540`s driving each paddle will make enough splash…..That`s what is in GE and they do OK

Do you know…..The paddle boxes have transfers to simulate the vent holes!……..Ridiculous

There you go Bob, First panel epoxied to Side wall, just placed in and a piece of Plasticard bent in to hold it in place and then second panel to that wood glued and screwed, you won't move that.

Does it set hard or is it like sticky toffee?

There you go Bob, where I bought this I can't remember though, but as it says on the left hand bottle, clear, hard and non brittle, had this for the last three models, you can use it when I've finished with it on this model, though knowing you, you'll want to start this afternoon!.

A rather confused picture of the paddle drive framework

Quite a trick assembly to align due to the lack of reference surfaces

The final glueing stage………Hopefully all is shipshape and tidy?

The endwalls and tray needed to have reference centre lines for accurate alignment

I would be interested to hear any comments from previous builders on the section?

While the glue sets, time to make a start on the paddlewheels

All the parts are nicely made, but rather fiddly to assemble…….Note the box container to prevent those little pesky pivot pins from getting away!

I hope there are a few spares in the kit!

                                                  Hello Paul

No complaints with the kit whatsoever, what is a surprise is that there is no stand included in the kit?

I would have preferred thicker ply for the central section……..3mm is a bit flimsy

It's pleasing to see that the central section fits the hull inner profile, quite nicely

Bob. I see the paddles are in fact sticking out from the frames a fair bit..do you think that they could be trimmed widthways to produce a slimmer wheel, and if so how thin would that be overall?? I like the idea of using the GP paddles for the next project but they are a bit wide as they are.

                                                      Ashley
