I'm looking for a esc to use on my bow thruster and need both forward and reverse the same amount of power both directions for turning left as right.

Most mtronics ESCs are symetrical in output along with many others. Just avoid the ones that say things like "50 amps forward, 20 reverse".

Or use a switcher or a servo with two micro switches.

Malcolm's suggestion of a servo and microswitches is simple, practical, and reliable. A friend of mine has been using this method for years without any problems.

The problem with using a switch is that the motor suddenly goes from stop to full speed. The paddles in some bow-thrusters are not very well secured to the motor spindle and we have seen several where they have detached because of this shock, usually rendering the thruster not repairable or even replaceable.

If you want a decent ESC which will run at equal speeds in each direction and won't involve wondering about disconnecting the BEC then I suggest ACTion P79 (10A) or P81(5A).
