Good day all. I am starting on the Billings tug Zwarte Zee soon. Any suggestions for a suitable motor? Thanks. Brian.

For direct drive with a prop of around 40-45mm dia one of these should do the job on 12 volts **LINK**

If you want more torque then I'd suggest one of these **LINK**

Hi Southern sailor

I have the second type of motor in mine. Kip's idea is not good due to weight, the motor is brilliant, i have the 24v in my Amsterdam, but for Zwart Zee you dont have the dispacment in the hull

Thanks people. I must admit that the model looks very short of freeboard in the stern area so I would be wary of adding too much weight. I was wondering about the T4A by Mobile Marine Models. Would that be too light? Otherwise Dave's suggestions could be the answer. Brian

T4A would be fine – it's quite small and light.

The T4a is a very nice motor and seeing I have two from a trip to UK some years back, I was wondering about using two T4a's driving one shaft. I have the facilities to make a gearbox to do that. Can anyone point me to belt drives and their design. Are there commercial belt drive systems (i would prefer belt to gears as they are not as noisy) for models that could be incorporated into such a gearbox.

Also, is it practical to couple two motors to one shaft? If one goes slightly faster that the other it would be using power to overcome the difference. Antone got any advice on this? Thanks and cheers for now. Brian

Why would you want to? If you're unhappy about the power of a T4 being adequate then fit a larger single motor. Despite apparently successful experiment in this area I'm far from convinced that there are any practical advantages to this and still several electrical issues which could crop up. Unless you're the type that wants to climb mountains just because they're there then my advice would be to keep things simple.

Hi Brian, It’s a long time since I built a Zwarte Zee, but I do remember that mine was overpowered with a decaperm on 6 volts. I ran well throtled back most of the time.
Why not just stick the T 4 in and try it? It’s a good motor. If you’re happy, fine, if not move on to another motor. Nothing lost, experience gained.
It’s how I’ve learned, and continue to.

Ps Brian, I mucked around wuth 2 motors on 1 shaft many years ago, don’t go there, lots more amps, bu…r all difference.
T4, if you have some props, start with the 40 and see how you go.
