I am thinking of using a servo to elevate gun barrels on a model. I was wondering if its possible to modify a servo so when its moved, it stays where it is and doesn't go back to the middle position?

Sounds like you might need one of these **LINK**
A servo will always follow the movement of the Tx stick unless you put a device like this in between the servo and the receiver to alter that.

A cheap alternative is to fix the stick so it stays put when you let go or remove the servo electronics and use a small ESC, effectively turning the servo into a motor and gearbox.

Hi all I am a new member but have subscribed to Model Boats for years.

I am about to start a 1/16th Severn Class lifeboat and want to have working wipers. I know this will be servo controlled but how does the servo operate on a continual basis when switched on the Tx?

                Any advise would be appreciated

                Jim

I would have thought that it may be better to get a small very slow geared motor     http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MICRO-GEARED-ELECTRIC-MOTOR-120-rpm-3-6v-FOR-RADAR-CRANE-ACCESSORY-DRIVE-/261540850532?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item3ce50cab64              and make up the gear to change rotary to oscillating movement as in a real wiper motor. That can then operate from a simple switch.

Mike ( Think loco wheels, only in reverse )

Hi Mike Doh why didn't i think of that such a simple solution to what appeared to be a difficult problem.

                    Many thanks

                      Hi,

                      Thanks for the suggestions.

I bought a servo control unit, and it will give the correct slow control for gun barrel elevation.

Is it possible to use the same method to rotate a turret? Is is possible to modify a servo so it turns farther than just 45 degrees either way?

Yes the servo can be made to travel further http://www.modelradioworkshop.co.uk/products/turret-servo-controller
