Okay you clever lot out there i'm nearing the end of my gato build and to put all the motors etc in ni intend to cut part of the deck away behind the conning tower and down to within 6 to 8 inches of the stern .I was thinking of cutting a length of balsa wood ,coating it in pva glue to waterproof it and screwing the upper deck to that .Is this right or can any one suggest anyone different .

If its getting wet, forget PVA, use epoxy or one of the "wet rot" treatments. PVA is OK on things that get a bit wet now and then, but I wouldn't trust it if immersion was likely. The best that you ever see on any PVA container is "water resistant" which means that it will go soggy on you eventually.

Andy. I would use ply in preference….how thick are we talking about??? As to waterproofing, thinned sanding sealer or dope or simply thinned undercoat (to soak into the wood) should be ok

My Oberon (balsa and 1.5mm ply), is simply sanding sealed and painted and has lasted ok.
