I am currently building a 1:20 scale model of RTTL 2757 from Vic Smeed’s drawings and come to a hiatus at deck level. looking at pictures of various RTTL models on the Internet I see that many have yellow decks, others have blue decks and yet a few have grey decks! One model pic, however, shows strip planked decks. Has anyone any idea what the decks are on 2757 (at RAF Hendon), one cannot see them from ground level?

The photo below of a 2757 model was taken at a Model Boat Mayhem event in 2007 and shows the boat with a planked deck.

Many thanks Colin. A good planked deck always looks so much smarter than a painted one. Just a comment on the pic – the skipper should be keelhauled for running with fenders down!

Hi there Rob

If you follow this link; it is for the RTTL 2751 witch was built with the aid of Vic Smead plans, plans from the builders and a lot of photos supplied on loan to me. The Vic Smead plans were modified to produce the correct chine line and also the wedge step on the back of the hull.

As far as I can remember there where two or three boats that had a canvas covering applied to the deck and painted dark Gray but most of them had varnished decks in the beginning.

All and any information very much appreciated. I’ve decided to go the planking route and hope soon to unearth the last piece of Indian teak I have in my shed. Failing that I’ll use some East African mahogany which I have previously cut down to 8mm x 1.5mm strips.n,

Now, THAT is one magnificent model ‘bluebird’. Question: was it standard practice not to knib the deck planks around the bow curve?

hi there Rob

Although all of these boats look very similar – they were built in the UK in various shipyards and building styles varied. You may come across one or two which has the deck planking done differently – the same as some of these boats were originally built with three engines and three props and they were later in their lives modified to two engines. There is even one which had an Olekin gun mounted on the rear engineroom hatch during the Rhodesian troubles.

Lot of scope for the modeller in these vessels.

Many thanks for all this info, John and the pics too. I decided at the outset to build my model around 2757 – or as near as I can from some 10000km away! Next time I’m up your way, and have the opportunity to visit RAF Hendon again I’m determined to take along a pogo stick – or a very long pole and cable release for the camera – so I can get a view of topsides!

Interesting about that one in Rhodesia – must have been quite a hassle getting it there.

He, he, he, he, he! Hoo boy, I know that feeling soooo well, John! Phew! The idea of transporting 68ft and 26 tons of boat by road from Beira to Kariba (for example) was beginning to bring out so beads of sweat! ‘-).

Does anyone here have detailed views or drawings for the open bridge area: floor levels, colour of bulkheads, details of fittings/instrumentation, etc?
