      Hi all,

haven't built a model boat for many years, but not too well these days and when in hospital before Xmas decided that I needed to build something simple and not too large that could be built indoors without upsetting shmbo.

Plans, DVD, woodpack etc arrived, just what I wanted. Has anyone in here finished one (apart from Mr Griffin) that I could pinch some ideas from?

      Thankyou.

      Jeff

          Hello Jeff

          Welcome to the forum.

Most of us have built wooden MTBs in our time so there is a huge potential store of information, I think the best way to find a solution to a problem is to simply ask a question and then one (or all) of us will jump in with an answer.

          All the best

          Paul

Hello Paul, thanks for the welcome, yes that's probably the best way of doing it. The basic construction doesn't hold any, well not many, fears, so I'll get started on that, then when I get to the electrickery bit I'll ask.

Of course I'd love to talk to anyone who has built same.

            Thanks again,

            Jeff.

              Hi Jeff,

Is this the Traplet wood pack kit? If so, there is a topic on the Model Boat Mayhem website:

Never let it be said that we don't have the best interests of model boaters at heart, even if they embrace our competitors!

                Hi Jeff

Please feel free to ask any questions no matter how silly you might think they are (as we will have someone silly who can answer) Do you have a digital camera? as posting photos is a big help when trying to solve problems.

                Hi Colin

Competitors? aren't we all one big happy family.

                Paul

                                    Hi all.

Recently I bought the Sarik MTB 379 kit.  It caught my eye last year and I did some research to make sure I could get all the deck fittings etc. before I bought it.  Adrian at Battlecrafts has been most helpful and is supplying a kit at 1/32 scale, containing everything and a few bits more too.  Also went to Cornwall Model Boats and have ordered stuff which is yet to come.  I’m going to the Eden project next month so, since CMB is just down the road, I plan to go to CMB with the completed hull and sort out the running gear.  Two motors.  Another first for me.

And I’ve made a couple of bits myself in advance of starting the hull.

The ‘short kit’ included the dvd and an article, both which were useful.  Hopefully I’ll get to start this week.

I found some very helpful photos of this boat at https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/items/393778.

                                      hi there,

The Vosper MTB has been on my ‘to-do’ list for a good few year and I am now building one.

I am using Barry Griffin’s plan as a basis.  The plan was originally a freebie in the Marine Modelling Magazine dated April 2011.  Also, I am using as a reference the late Mr John Lambert’s Coastal Forces book as there is a good lot of information in that book as well.  Where I have deviated from Barry’s plans is – I have used John Lambert’s line drawings to produce the correct shaped frames and also I am double diagonally planking the hull with obechi and mahogany.

Couple of pics to show my progress so far.DSCN1889DSCN1890DSCN1892DSCN1891

                                        <p style=”text-align: left;”>Hi John.</p>
That looks a bit longer than the Sarik kit.  I keep to about 25″ as I’m short on storage space.

Also I have to admit to only making from kits.  I don’t have the set up to do what you’re doing.  But I enjoy it nonetheless.

Will you be making your own deck fittings?

Hope it all goes well for you.

                                            hi there Colin

The model is a 1:32 scale and it works out at about 28 inches long. about 8 inches beam.

Philip, if your model is about 25 inches in length it work out at about 1:35 scale.

I have been reading through the article in the magazine and there is an insert image of the wood pack that I think may be supplied/can be supplied.   I can identify some of it from the plans, other bits I am struggling to see where they fit.  It would be interesting to see images of the wood pack that you were supplied with.

As far as fittings are concerned for this model – I will purchase some and manufacturing the rest myself.  A bit of mix n match.

The photos made it look rather bigger than that John!

28 inches is a handy size. My Silver Mist is  21 inches and I am working on 1:35 scale. Hope to have some more pics soon.

                                                Hi John.

In truth it’s 710mm x 195mm which is 1/32, so same sizes as yours.

Attached photos of balsa and plywood wood pack.

1..Frames, most of which I’ve removed.  Some frames are made of 2/3 pieces glued together.

2…Skins and deck, paired.  Transom and hatch.

There are also 2 drawings of the components for reference.  Also a deck plan and elevation, attached.

I’ve bought the deck fittings at 1/32 from Battlecrafts.  They should be delivered this coming week.  My arthritic hands won’t let me do small detailed work.

I’ve bought 2 twin Vickers mg at 1/32 from Ringo resin on eBay and I made the IFF transponder and interrogator myself, after a few trial efforts.

                                                IMG_20260131_185858443_MFNR

I placed and order with Cornwall MB for stanchions and such like, and I’ve bought flags from Cap Marquettes

The kit itself is easy enough and allows plenty of scope for embellishment.

                                                Hope this helps.

                                                  hi there

I am just finishing off a second layer of planking and the next stage will be 2-3 coats of Zpoxy finishing coat, rubbed down between each coat.  Then, I can fit the running gear.

                                                    Hi there,

Just like at school, I have been getting told off – not enough information about model & methods.

The outer planking on the hull is 8mm x 1mm obechi plank, glued in place with Aliphatic Resin and this was then filled and sanded.  The 2nd layer of planking was applied which was mahogany of various widths but all the same thickness of 0.5 mm.   The widths of the planking varied between 4mm and 6mm.   This is due to the fact that I was using my old offcuts and scraps of mahogany which us modellers seem to hang on to – just in case we need them.  Then I have applied, up to now 2 coats of Zpoxy finishing resin at this present time.  I will apply the 3rd coating when I have rubbed the model back and am happy with the finish.

                                                    John

                                                      Hello John,

Another fine job, rather a shame to paint it grey ??

                                                      Regards  Ray
