Think my wife has great faith in my ability as she bought me a set of plans for HMS Dido.  Now that is very commendable of her but as I have never built anything like this before I am completely out of my depth.

Could anyone recommend an idiots guide book that I could purchase to work my way through these plans and put an engine/remote control in please.

      Thanks

        Hi Roy,

Not a lot of information to go on here.

My initial reaction was to ask where your wife obtained the plans from and how detailed are they.?

Are they a fully detailed set or a less detailed model makers set.

Also how big will the completed model be and do you have any experience in model making or woodworking.

        Regards

        Grumpy

Thanks for the response.  I can probably deal with the plans and were bought from a website (this one I think), think I would like a book that will guide me through terminology etc.

The completed model should be about 4ft long, have built a couple of models in the dim distant past but never from scratch.  I used to be an engineer until retirement.

            Hi Roy

As an ex engineer you should have no problem in building a model boat. Do you have any experience in using wood as building material?

Not a lot I’m afraid. I’ve looked again at the plans this morning and the things I do not understand is putting in the engine etc.

                Hi Roy

If putting in the engine is all that you don’t understand then you should have no problems building this model.

Does your plan show the position of the engine?

If so all you have to do is keep the engine shaft in line with the prop shaft to eliminate any shakes. All the other ancillary bits such as battery, receiver etc can be placed within the hull to suit ballast and trim i.e. wherever they fit best to suit the look of the model when in water.

Bite the bullet my friend and enjoy the build.

If you come across a problem there are lots of us on this site that are only to willing to help with advice based upon practical knowledge.

All the best for the build

                  Hi Roy,

Firstly I would suggest a visit to your local library to see what books they have on model boats.

Next you could try MyHobbyStore.com and see what they have to offer.  Traplet Publications also have assorted books on model boats and may have the one you need.

Have you considered joining a club as it is always easier to have something explained face to face rather than on a Forum like this?.

On a final note and, purely guesswork here, it sounds to me as if the plan is one of those by Glynn Guest.  He has had many plans published in Model Boats over the years and they all follow the same pattern of simplicity and ease of building.   A copy of the building article which accompanied the plan should make things a lot clearer.  I would suggest that you contact the Editor of Model Boats to see if you can obtain a copy of the article.  Even if you cannot get the original article, any article on building one of Glynns designs should provide enough information about the engine and radio control installation for you to complete the model.

Thanks to everyone for their help.  I have made a start and as someone else has mentioned, the plans do not always run true.  Might take me a few years but I will get there.
