Very nice Ashley,

You certainly will notice it on the pond.

I have seen it in action, it is incredibly manoeuvrable.

sorry….things not thongs! (although some of the passengers are scantily clad….)

Another snap. The Sans Pareil. Lovely looking little battleship. Little being the word, its not as big as the picture shows it to be!

Have been squirting expanding foam inside two new tops. Not the first time I have done this!! Not to fear, its sort of external, and is designed to fill the gaps between hull and top to limit the ingress of the wet stuff. The new tops are VERY low freeboard and theres no practical way of sealing the top of the hull, so will be calm water tops.

              Hello,
I am sad that I haven’t been to Bushy Park for a few months, as I have missed out on the D Day event that looked great, and seeing Ashley’s new ferries.

However I have been getting on with the Ark Royal. Almost 1 year on from the test launch last July, I have finally finished the hull. The boat decks are all cut, the deck is on and painted, I have mostly finished the island, and the major deck markings are all applied.

I am really happy with the outcome and intend to sail it this summer as it now looks complete to the casual observer. Of course there are many railings, aerials, life rafts, catwalks, cranes etc to still create, but they can be done over time. There are also many ships boats to make and install.

              Noel.

Noel. Nice to hear from you. Carrier looking good. That’s a bold deck I must say! Will look great packed with Phantoms and so on. Need some men as well.

Obv ready for late summer, eh?????

Bold the deck is, but that is how it was in the 70s with a day-glo red centreline!

There was also a big red “R” to the port side of the round down which I am still working on.

I want to sail it this month, before I go on holiday in August.

Wow. Looks fabuloso Noel. Yeah, another….ooooh…20 or so aircraft would be nice.

Oddly having chucked in my pennyworth on the hull playing g and riveting thread I suddenly find myself in a similar situation. The model concerned had a deck made up of riveted plates…what to do? At the scale, About 1/80. It doesn’t need rivets, but it does need to look plated. SO…I have cut about 120 rectangles of paper out (15x25mm) and artfully pasted then on, sort of randomly, on a pre drawn grid, with the expectation that once painted black, it will look like a plated deck. I sprayed it grey and the shed lights caught the edges and it looks very promising. Sides next. 30mm squares.not somany, possibly…or perhaps a few more.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Bit of luck today. Needed some matt black spray paint and was going to go to halfords…but poundland have some for £2.50 a tin!! It doesn’t come out very cleanly, but it’s more than adequate for what I want. Decent size tins…got two.

Tested the armament out on the second of the current two builds and not too bad at all. The battle between them will be quite fun.

Not saying, it’s a trivial thing and you could say the caption does not relate to the photo….or..as I have just had a thought that the same hull was used.. we will see. Another gp hull topper should also be in there.. obv not worth the mention!

Poundland spray paint has gone on ok. Only did half the hull as waiting for info from America.

Yes, that is a model of HMS Express, an Archer class patrol boat, not a Russian corvette.

The next general purpose hull tops are ones which perch on top. They are both very low freeboard and I am worried about the possibility if flooding.

I have wrapped the hulls in clingfilm and upended them on the tops and then used builders squirty foam in order to minimise the gap but it’s not as firm as I had hoped and it’s getting squashed as I build the tops.

I wondered if a silicone rubber might be better. Like the stuff used for moulding things? Wrap te hulls in clingfilm again. Upend on the tops and then pour all round the edges. I might get a much better seal then….???

                                        Hi Tim

Unfortunately the hull and tops are different shapes so using a spongy tape like that would be tricky to get a seal. I think a pouring silicone rubber would do although I would need to put some ribs in the top so the rubber stayed in place.

There will only be 30mm of freeboard ( and that’s way too much for scale even then) so they need some sort of attempt to stop water slopping in.

                                          Hi Ashley,

On mi submarines I put a release mould release agent on the flattest surface (can even be cling film). Fill the gap with a high modulus (thick) builders silicone using a caulk gun and let the job cure fully. It might take a couple of days. Then take it apart and trim off the excess. After that a thin wipe with clear silicone grease gives an excellent removeable seal. Mi Puffer is done like this. She’s not got a lot of freeboard but can take a lot of water on her decks and stay perfectly dry inside.

                                          Len. 🙂

Discovered the wverbuikd stuff is low modulus (soft) and handily was out of stock, so surfed again and found a product in a high modulus form, anthracite grey, and have ordered a few.

Barring flagpole and hooking up the turret rotation. The first top is almost done, as there’s nothing to it.

Second coming along. The curved ends I had hoped would be thin card but the base shape is not compatible, so I have crudely planked the area, ezekote and fine clothed it than wopped the P38 on. After some sanding and remedial filling this seems to have done the trick.

I need to get two cowl vents now, make a funnel, Hatches and then more gunports.

Our dance group summer dance is tonight, I only hope today will not be as hot as yesterday or it will be…difficult.

On Sunday assuming it’s going to be scorchio, I plan to get there early and leave sharp, as I am playing in Guildford castle grounds in the afternoon.

I am bringing the canal boat with its new digger top, and I have super detailed the houseboat lid. Looks fabbydozo

High modulus silicone fantastic. Got a wonderful grippy rubber seal around the new tops. The clingfilm has stuck to the silicone but no matter. Need to trim now…will need a new blade as its difficult to cut.

Not scorchio on Sunday but quite nice.

The digger on the canal boat appears to be the best thing since sliced bread with the spectators. I even collected some larger gravel bits off the path to add as the load area looked a bit empty.

Farman working well and not as tender as I always think it will be. Fast and very quiet although it looks horribly top heavy on the plane.

Made the landing diorama beaches from builders foam, as found a few doors away. Needed to raise the beach up as of course the lander bow flaps do not lower, and i am not cutting them off as was suggested fir extra realism….

The beach will be covered with yellow cloth, so the foam was simply cut to shape and chamfered appropriately, doesn’t need sealing or painting. One of the landers has Lone*Star Australian soldiers on it, so I will have some Australian Airfix chaps running up the beach as well as British army types.
