I shall enjoy looking at this build, I was looking at the original article in an old Model Boats magazine only yesterday.

          Proper boat building.

Hi Charles, I wasn't aware it had been in the magazine, what issue, perhaps I could find it in the online archive?

Hi Brian, it was way back in 1969. I think the series ran to 3 parts, but I only have the first 2. I can scan the articles for you and email them to you later today.

                  Hi Brian/Chas

I'd guess this was described in the 70's ?? I think this is called lapped strake planking, this will make a great model

                  Regards Ray Good Luck

Back in the days when all of the lettering on the plan was done with a Rotring pen and a stencil. Ask me how I know.

We've often stopped to look at these lovely little boats whenever we've seen one in a harbour or marina. Far more interesting than those swanky glassfibre diesel-eaters. I'll look forward to this build.

That would be great if you could scan them Charles, thanks.

Yes Dave, all imperial measurements too! They are interesting, the plan suggests steaming the wood to fit the frames, but they couldn't have done this is real life.

Yes Ray, the planking looks a bit tricky, especially the "geralding " around the stem and the transom, thank goodness for the Internet to find out what that was!

I have seen boat restorers steaming full size planks to fit to an Oakley lifeboat, so it WAS done!! How much it was done of course is the question…

Many thanks to Chas for these scans from the original magazine article, all very useful, but in true "Sod's law" tradition part 2 wasn't available which covers the planking!

Slow progress as there have been other demands on my time, but have now built the frame, temporarily fixed the transom to it and now I've made the three sections of the keel, called the "deadwood" on the plans, joined them using two scarf joints, and the ram plank which is the stern section of what would be the keel on most boats.

Plank 1 in place, the plans give an oversize template which is then trimmed and sanded to fit.

My first attempt at "geralding" where the plank end is tapered and shaped to sit next to the preceding plank at the transom and bow

Using Obechi 1/16" thickness, which is very fragile and cracks along the grain with any rough handling! Hence the steaming contraption below is necessary before you offer up the plank to make any twist or bend to the hull!

2nd planks fitted on both sides, need to be careful now to keep them symmetrical.

DISASTER! some glue had found its way between the transom and the frame and also at the bow…. so when I tried to lift the hull off the frame it cracked the transom and along plank 1 on the port side.

"Fortunately" the obechi is so brittle it cracks cleanly along the grain, the spruce transom also cracked cleanly, so repairs can be made.
