A very pretty ship, Brian, both off and on the water, but in particular the latter!

Thanks chaps, I'm not too keen on putting figures on boats, however, I did cheat and used a ship's wheel that I bought, so I am going to try and make a wheel and the longboat to try and develop my small scale making skills.

third attempt at a small scale wheel, using 3 pieces of 1mm ply to get the contours and structure.

I think your wheel there looks very nice and in keeping with the general style of the model!

For possible inspiration on how to make one, the instructions for this ship's wheel laser cut minikit from the Syren Model Ship Company make for an interesting read!

Obviously, they are instructions for a kit, but the general construction I find provides quite a few ideas on how one might go about it also from scratch … Anyway, here is a link: **LINK**

Thanks Mattias, useful link, my main problem is cutting these tiny pieces accurately, my bandsaw is a bit too large, I might have invest in a small jigsaw.

Longboat finally done, after many false starts trying to use frames and planking that wouldn't hold together, tried mining bread and butter construction

And I even had a go at carving a tiny figurehead, not too pretty close up but the profile looks OK.

Yes it's an iPad, I have tried rotating them and saving them, but to very little effect. I'm going to ask a pal with a decent camera to take some closeup shots.

This project has me very interested…. as a new builder though I am apprehensive about buying the plans which appear to just be a very simple blueprint style sheet and no instructions or additional information. Can anyone tell me if they have the plans, is there additional information provided, or just the sheets shown earlier in this thread?

                                            thanks!

Hi Jay, I have the plans, there are no instructions, there was a series of articles in the magazine when they first came out, but I couldn't locate the relevant back copies. As I have built other models before, I went ahead and had a go. The only thing I would change if I was doing it again, is to decorate and furnish the aft cabin before I sealed it all up, it has Windows all around and the interior is visible. I really like the look of the finished model. I used 3mm flexiply for the hull planking and upper sections, and ordinary ply for the frames.

Thank you so much for the info Brian, I was a bit apprehensive about paying that amount for such a striped down set of plans. I may do it one day, but for the time, I am going to research some free plans online and see if I can get really excited about this hobby before going after something as advanced as this.

In my experience, free plans are not very good, good luck in finding one that will suit you. The first model I built was the Gwen M and a choose it because the hull was made up of four section, not individual planks. Have you thought of having a go at a free plan model given away with the MB magazines? They don't often have sailing boats, but there are some very nice models.

If you check the Eezebilt website (through Google) there is a set of plans for the Black Rose and possibly a build article . May be a more simplified version – but the down load is free – so worth checking out . There are a lot of plans also on the Old Boats website which might also suit for free. If you cant find PM me and will forward the address.
