I went for a sail this morning aboard one of the Mersey ferries which went out to greet RMS Queen Mary 2 .arriving in the river as part of the three ships , QM2. QV. and QE visiting their spiritual home port of Liverpool for the 175th celebration of Cunard Steam Ship company . The weather was very misty with the occasional rain but enjoyable non the less . QV and QE are scheduled to arrive just before mid day tomorrow Monday 25th May with QM escorting the trio as part of a grand three ship sail into the river .

Excellent photos Dave. QM2 is really quite something and her interiors are spectacular. Sometimes you can get some great bargains for a transatlantic crossing with the flight in the opposite direction at a knock down price too.

Thank you Colin . I must admit I would not say no to a voyage to New York , perhaps one day . QM2 is an attractive looking ship , in some ways very different from her sisters . the weather is looking favourable for Monday I don't fancy waiting another 175years for the next visit.

By contrast and just over the other side of the liner terminal is the Merseyside Maritime Museum and as part of the ship model collection is a lovely Bassett Lowke model of the PS Britannia. Originally built for the British North American Steam Packet which became Cunard and was their first purpose built Atlantic liner. A little different to the QM2 is having only 115 passengers, was only 1135tons and had a speed of 9 kts and was paddle driven ,. yet Britannia held the Blue Riband between 1840 -1842. Strangely Britannia went on to serve in the German fleets ending her days as part of the Imperial German Navy and was sunk in the 1880s at Kiel during torpedo trials.

What a wonderful day and what a spectacle .It was amazing to see how these huge vessels where superbly choreographed into position in front of the Cunard buildings . The sea front on both sides of the Mersey from the entrance to Cammel laird ship yard was crammed with over a million people eager to get a glimpse of this once in a life time maritime treat .

Great shots Dave. I've been looking forward to seeing photos of the 3 Queens together again, and you have not disappointed me.

Thank you Peter you are very welcome and I'm pleased that you like them as I enjoyed taking them .

One last two shots which was taken just prior to the departure of QM 2. Queen Mary 2 returns in a few weeks to celebrate the first trans Atlantic sailing of the PS Britannia from Liverpool to Halifax and New York 175years ago.

                      Thanks for taking interest.

                        Impressive pictures, Dave

It must have cost a small fortune assembling the ships, just for a public display?

Great Pics there Mr Wooley ( Not that I would have expected less), particulary like the Seal.

Decided against going and watched the Live streaming from Cunard , glad I didnt as Can,t be doing with crowds..

Hi Bob good to hear from you . Yes I suspect to have three ships in the one place is a really costly exercise . But I bet they thought it was well worth it.

Hi Larry good to hear from you and thanks for the complement , The seal I noticed by one of the ships heading up river I only found it by accident when I was examining the picture . I believe it is a grey seal . The crowds where huge but the traffic was not as bad as we expected. With a little help from Mersey Travel and leg power I was able to dodge all the traffic.

                            Thanks for taking interest

                              Hi Dave

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your photo coverage of the three queens, I had hoped to get into Liverpool and see the spectacle for myself but illness has kicked me in the nuts again and I am confined to barracks.

I am sure that many others on this forum are also very grateful to you for your tireless work in covering, not only the three queens but also for the frequent reports from your walks around the port.

                              Thank you

                              Paul

                                    Hi Dave

Big thanks from me. i would never have got the chance to see those three fantastic ships all together. Your other photos tell a great story of what goes on in the area too.

Must say though, I am off to Portsmouth at the weekend and will be taking a trip around the docks etc. first time for me and will have the lad with me too. I will take some snaps of what I can see, but can't guarantee they will be as good as yours. Will post the up on a new thread once I am home again.

                                    Keep the piccies coming.
