While returning from St Malo to Portsmouth today we were privileged to see a real vision. Originally built in Germany 1926 as the Padua, Kruzenshtern is one of the last of the old 'Cape Horners'.

      Truly, in John Masefield's words,

'They mark our passage as a race of men

Earth will not see such ships as those again.'

      So true.

          Colin, great ship, nice photo.

Makes you realise how dumpy the Victory is.

Colin you are so lucky and always in the right place at the right time…..can you give me 7 numbers between 1 and 49

There has been some discussion about a new breed of merchant ships having aerofoils as replacements for sails so that they can use the wind to augment their engines.

                Similar to the Great Eastern?

I've never read of any reference to the benefit of GE's sails, except when they were searching for the broken cable, where they drifted sideways for some reason?

                Nice sailing ship, Colin

How does it stay upright in a strong wind?……….Did they always reduce sail?

It must have been frightful at night!

Here are a couple of wind assisted merchant ships.

How about a few wind farm type of props mounted on the deck and being adjustable for any wind direction.

The power generated could drive a turbine prop……..Down below?

If the ship was travelling against the wind, the wind would drive the prop round, and the speed of the ship would drive the prop even faster

If the ship was travelling with the wind………It would have the reverse effect…….or would it?

If the ship was travelling, beam on…….then the wind would drive the prop round nicely!

Is there any sense in this idea?

                    Dr Crackpot strikes again!

And there are also those round "sails" like extra long funnels (cant think of the technical description right now), which are supposed to work very well..

Bob, I am not sure that the wind farm type idea is a goer, as the drag would negate the likely thrust from a prop powered by the elctricity generated,,, (bootlaces and lifting spring to mind)

Solar panels, but there agian, not much power for the weight and deck area needed etc etc.
