It’s sad to see a great ship go to its end, but I suppose after nearly 34 years of service, and in the current economic climate, it was inevitable.

You have trained your daughter well, Colin, excellent photos.

I didn’t train her Peter, she has an eye for a photo and more than gives me a run for my money!

              Yes, good photos indeed.

It was very enlightening to see the program on TV “Caribbean patrol” following HMS Manchester around. The Manchester is of a similar vintage, and although these ships looks very smart still, everything on and in the ships very old and spares start to become impossible to source.especially the electronics.

Things were constantly breaking down on the Manchester, and this is unavoidable of course.

It doesnt excuse the failiure to replace it nevertheless. I personally think the new super-carriers we may get (but only have one operational…and how long before the off duty one gets sold off??) are a waste of money and we need something like some enlarged “Invincibles” as being more of a long term affordable (and “man-able” size) vessels, especially with more capable aircraft on board.
After all, as soon as they scrap our last carrier, we are involved in yet another “peacekeeping” role flying tornadoes 3000 miles from Britain, or relying on foreign bases to carry out sorties that a carrier offshore could accomplish with ease.
NOT to mention having one of two ships off the coast that is also due to be scrapped AND a Nimrod R1 aircraft, ditto.

              sorry. off soapbox now
