The report today of the discovery of the wreck of the submarine E18 which struck a mine in the First World War is a reminder of just how many of these old wrecks are now coming to light. Recently we have also had the wreck of the French battleship Danton http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7898890.stm and HMAS Sydney HMAS Sydney wreck photos.

Not so long ago the wreck of HMS Victoria was discovered and it was found that the ship had embedded herself vertically into the seabed, an extraordinary sight:: http://www.oz.net/~markhow/pre-dred/victoria.htm

Many of the sunken ships of Jutland are still down there to be seen and it is surprising just how intact ships that were assumed to have been blown to pieces actually are: Jutland wrecks

I find all this absolutely fascinating and wonder what will come to light next. It also leads onto the question of just how many model boat wrecks are lying at the bottom of lakes and ponds all over the country.

I found the vertical picture of HMS Victoria extremely fascinating. Nice links .

I know there area  few at the bottom of Llanberis Lake and I believe at one of the clubs ponds near me. So I would imagine quite a few .

Here is a shot of the barque JHELUM that was built in Liverpool in 1850.   I took it in Port Stanley Harbour, Falkland Islands, in 1982.    Recently, the entire forward half of the ship has collapsed into the harbour, so sadly, this sight is lost forever.
I managed to get aboard and found the after half virtually intact and the captain’s cabin even afforded me considerable shelter one dark wintry day when an unexpected squall swept down the harbour.

I too find old wrecks fascinating!………..This one is at Rhyl in North Wales, the “City of Ottowa”

It was built in Canada and wrecked in 1906 and was just left to rot away. It will be moved soon, to make way for the new marina, the problem is that it is a protected wreck and has to be preserved somewhere, somehow?

This wreck of an old steel hulled sailing ship, whose name escapes me, has been built into the north wall at the mouth of the Hunter River, in Newcastle NSW.

                  Could it be the Adolphe?

Adolphe. French four-masted barque, steel, 3204/2676 tons. Built and reg. at Dunkirk, 1902. Lbd 296.7 x 44.9 x 26 ft.Inward bound from Antwerp, lost on the Oyster Bank, Newcastle, 30 September 1904.  As she was being towed through the entrance, the tugs Hero and Victoria could not hold her and she was swept on to the wreck of the Colonist, then battered by giant waves. The lifeboat hurried to the scene and within two hours all 32 of the crew had been taken off.The northern breakwater of the entrance to the port of Newcastle was extended after the loss of the Adolphe. The French consul made an offical visit to Newcastle to recognise the efforts of the lifeboat crew.   [LN],[#NH],[LH],[SAN – barquentine]
@When the breakwater was extended in 1906 and reached the remains of the Adolphe, her remaining two masts and jib-boom were removed for safety reasons;  she is actually resting across the remains of SSWendouree, wrecked in 1898, and SS Lindus, lost in 1899.

The ribs of two old craft can be seen at low tide on the beach at Westward Ho!
                    Anyone know their names?

Paul, I think you’re right, that name rings a bell. I forgot to write down the details when I took the photo, but I’m almost certain it is the Adolphe.

At low water, the drive arms from the paddles of the ‘Rhosneigr’ can be seen at Rhos-on-sea, North Wales .

I spotted the above wreck roundabout about 1985 at Rhos on Sea, but haven`t seen it since

The engines off PS Rhosneigr are on display at the Liverpool Maritime Museum

Great shipwreck museum on the Isle of Wight, at the Arreton Barns complex.

Stuffed full of old tat from the seabed, and has loads of model boats around the walls to boot (and there are a few as well)

I stumbled acrross this information after reading Martin Easdown’s book ‘Lancashire’s Seaside Piers’ (also featuring the piers of the Mersey, Cumbria and the IOM), whilst researcing the Iron pier from Douglas IOM, (which was sold to Rhos-on-sea) I came across the item on the ‘Rhosneigr’, hence the post.

It is quite probable that the remains of the ‘Rhosneigr’ have either eroded/corroded away or been collected for scrap.
