      To Ned

Thanks for the e mail, I bought this toy for my grandson but found it a bit tame so I changed the standard motors for high speed buggy motors. The change in performance was outstanding but it killed the battery pack in half the time.

It only took half an hour to change the motors but the result was very well worth it.

As I said it was just for fun, after all model boating is meant to be enjoyable and not just tied to scale perfect craft with scale perfect speed in a scale perfect enviroment (even though the gold braid brigade did not approve)

I thought the problem with such ‘toy-models’ was that their radios didn’t work on the ‘set frequencies’ so could cause problems to others working with the ‘correct’ frequencies?  Certainly she looks as if she is going like a flying bomb

Have you thought of adding trim tabs to lower the nose a bit ?  Or does that reduce speed by increasing the waterline length?  Perhaps that doesn’t matter when one is using brute strength to go fast … I guess anyway it doesn’t look as if it is going so fast when it is closer to level.

          Hi JC

It actually went faster on a calmer piece of water all that was in the water was the props, give me brute force every time.

No problem with frequency clash as it was early morning and nobody else was sailing

          Thanks for the comments

          All the best

"Just the propellor in water" reminds me of a photo I saw yesterday of a sailing craft with just a fin and I guess a foil under the water with the single crew sitting on a platform/outrigger from hull not much wider than fin,  perhaps two feet above the water ….

I bought my son exactly the same boat and find it a bit pedestrian and not very exciting for him.  What size motors did you replace it with and were they brushless?

                HI Scoow2

They were an old pair of matched "magic johnson" buggy motors that I had lying around in the shed, a modern equivalent would be a 550 size and no they were not brushless.

                Cheers

                  Hi Paul,

Thanks for replying.  As it happens, I was just searching the net to find a couple of inexpensive 540 motors for my son’s boat.  I’m also considering upgrading the battery but that all depends on what type of speed controller is in the boat.  Don’t want to spend too much, after all it is just about having fun.  My lad gets a real buzz watching my nitro boat but doesn’t like the noise.  Hopefully this upgrade will give him a buzz.

                  Cheers

                   Dave

                    Hi Dave

No problem, I hope that you and your son have some fun with the upgraded boat. I know that mine has surprised a few nitro owners especially over a short sprint.

If you want to go the extra mile then try changing the props for larger ones.

                    All the best

                      Hi Paul,

Thanks, that’s something I hadn’t thought of but could well be worth a try.  Half the fun is in the experimenting, and it’s even better when it’s not an expensive scale model.your experimenting with.  I’ll let you know how I get on and, if it’s a success, maybe even try to get some video footage.

                      Cheers

                      Dave

                        Hi Paul,

I received the new motors yesterday but they are a little larger than those already installed.  Did you make any internal mods to the boat or change the couplings to make yours fit?

                        Thanks

                         Dave

                          Dave

I took the mounts out and used jubilee clips to hold the motors in position, I fixed the clips in place with epoxy glue. I changed the couplings for standard universal joints.

Take the time to get the new motors correctly in line with the shafts or you will get serious vibration.

                            Hi Paul,

I finally got round to making the modifications to my son’s boat yesterday.  It took a little longer than anticipated as I had to cut away the internal moulded motor mounts to fit the new motors.

We decided to test it in the bath last night to ensure it was balanced okay, and ended getting a telling off from the wife when we got an unexpected shower while testing the new motors.  Looking forward to getting it on the local pond as I think it will go like stink.

I did want to try larger props but have been unable to source any that come in left and right hand versions.

I will post a couple of pictures after we’ve given it it’s inaugral run.  Thanks for your help.

                              Hi Dave

Mine went very fast on the standard props and I had thought of bigger props but I had also thought of copying an idea from the Turbinia and fitting 2 standard props to each shaft approx 50mm apart, this would need some careful positioning to avoid cavitation but should result in @ 35% increase in speed.

Perhaps I will have a play with this idea sometime in summer.

I hope that you all have fun at the lake just watch the battery life and take a rescue boat (just in case)

                              All the best.
