I am building Glynn Guest's UTE and progressing very well. I prefer to use ply and softwood as opposed to Glynn's choice of balsa. However I am now at the point of adding the rubbing strips and purchased some lengths of 5mm square softwood (of unknown type) from my local model shop. In an idle moment today I offered up a length to the hull but unfortunately it snapped like a carrot. I propose getting the saucepan out tomorrow (I have warned the wife) and having a go at steaming or just by immersing in boiling water. Any hints or tips gratefully received regarding forming the strip into a curve to match the hull.

          Hi David

Don't go destroying the pots and pans just use the kettle and hold the wood in the steam coming from the spout for a couple of minutes. (use a cloth to hold the wood)

You might have to repeat the process for particularly tight curves.

A steam wallpaper stripper would be the thing to use (supposing you had one) like wot I do and I know thats not a lot of help if you havnt but a good DIY`er may just have one lurking to borrow. could do the whole plank v easy using the big flat steamer plate.

Ashley (sorry I will shut up now)

Use a couple of thin strips instead?

Gentlemen – I will give it a go tomorrow. Yes I do have a wall paper stripper. I did also consider the use of thinners strips as well. I have used that method before for making the shafts for carts.

                Many thanks

                  HI David

PM Sent, but basically from what I can remember I had a couple of hard Balsa strips,( Might have been a firework stick) , I soaked one end and then let it dry with a curve in it. Then glued the main flat section, let it dry for a day or 2 and then with some good wood glue and some hefty clamps glued it to the curve and left it for a few more days.. Has not sprung yet !!

I succeeded with reasonable success over the week-end. I still had the cardboard template for the deck so I used the curve to produce wooded former from a piece of 1 inch thick wood which in turn was fixed to a wooded base piece. I steamed the end of four strips using Ashley's method with a wall paper stripper/steamer. Clamped the steamed end of the strips around the former and after about three attempts produced reasonable curve. I fitted the strips from the bow to the stern.
