        Hi,

My wife has pursuaded me to build her a model of HMS Peregrine as I used to scratch buildbots in my youth, so I bought the plans, worked out where I can get the bits, except 1.2mm ply…

I can find 1.0mm and 1.5mm, but not 1.2mm. Any know of any suppliers?

          Hi Martin

1.2mm Ply is a fairly standard board and is used in the aircraft industry.

Have a look at this site **LINK**

Use 1.0mm. It's almost as thick, easier to bend and probably less expensive than 1.5mm. Just make sure it's WBP (Marine) Birch ply and not some cruddy "indoor" variety.

              Dave

WBP is not marine plywood. It is made to a much lower specification

The standard for marine plywood is BS1088 and beyond that, Lloyds approved. The BS1088 standard comes from the types of timbers used in the make up of the plywood and the quality of the timbers used.

You mean like this marine ply isn't? **LINK** Confusing, isn't it?
I think you'll find it's true that, while all marine ply is water-and-boil-proof, not all plywood described or held out for sale as WBP is marine ply. You clearly were aware of that already, but I thought I'd clarify the matter in case I had confused anyone else.
For making model boats either type will do the job well, but it's not necessary to buy true marine ply if you glue and waterproof the model properly. It's vastly more expensive and more difficult to work than WBP. I personally use a lot of Liteply, which isn't even WBP, and I've had no problems with it delaminating or soaking up water.

I have heard it said that even hardboard can be waterproofed ! Can this be true ?

Possibly…………….. but Ashley isn't giving away the secret any time soon.

Personally I reckon that a good slopping of Z-Poxy Finishing Resin will make anything waterproof – even toast. It just might be a bit of a b****r to sand smooth.

It is fairly obvious that you are on a healthy diet Dave. Those wholegrain breads are indeed very hard to sand but a super cheap sliced white is a different matter. It is also very easy to bond several slices together with an appropriate adhesive ( peanut butter is good ) forming a really strong laminate. ( sandwich )

I've heard it said that the East Germans made cars out of cardboard (the Trabant) and that was deliberate ploy so that in times of emergency people could bite a bit off the wing and thus avoid starvation. Especially tasty if dipped in Vodka!

Looks like we're back to bread and butter construction then…..

I agree that 1mm ply should be fine in place of 1.2mm.
