      Here's a good one !!

I want to put a handrail around the deck of a model and grab rails on the top edges of the cabins.

Handrail needs to be around 35mm high and grab rails about 7 – 10 mm

Where can I get the two lengths of stanchion that are the same thickness?

It seems from extensive enquiries with retailers that if a stanchion is shorter, then it has to be thinner. Doesn't make sense to me.

I can't be the only person in the country that wants two heights of rail in the same scale ?

Could you use 35mm stanchions cut down to make the shorter ones?

Mike, probably not good enough fot your fabulous model (whatever it is!) but we used galvanised wire mesh to (some would say) good effect. Cheap , v easy to do and very tough!! max hight 45mm…inch squares .

            DM.. no comment please !!!

            Ashley sorry.

It they are just single rails you need then you could consider using split pins which come in all sorts of sizes and can be cut to length. The loop at the top accommodates the rail and if you use copper or similar then you can solder it al together very neatly. Split pins were commonly used to make model boat railings in the old days before you could buy the finished (and usually expensive) items. It's a very cheap solution too.

Very nice of the clown to give you the box from his new pair of shoes……………………… What did you make with the lid – another hovercraft?

DM. I knew you couldn`t resist and would have to comment. If I were to make another one I could probably use them to walk on water.

Brass stanchions very expensive, and of course the reason why we used the mesh. For our application it works wonderfully and considering the length of railings it was the only way. A slightly better look may be achievable by cutting every other upright out, but who could be bothered??

The lid was probably used to make more landing craft.

I will look into the split pin idea. It sounds like a wizard wheeze.

I had thought of cutting down longer stancions but cutting off the bottom loses the step at the base and they no longer match.

                      Ashley,

Mike wants proper railings that will bear scrutiny up close not the cheap, strong, easy, looks good at 15' on the water bodge solution.

Trevor is of course right, but I felt duty bound to offer the cheap bodge alternative solution as it may be of use at some other time.

They are also useful for tying ropes to to moor boats up to the jetty, being very strong etc etc.

I always thought split pins looked a bit chunky myself, although quite fitting for a vintage model. Personal opinion, and not a criticism .

Ashley Fences and gates!! yes made me larf crying

I have some very delicate looking split pins in my bits box Ashley, they come in all types and sizes including those used for the big end of a tractor! It does rather depend upon what scale you are seeking to emulate.
