Does anyone know of a kit or plans for Malcom Campbells record breaking boat. Bluebird? the one that tragicaly killed him. I would like this to be my next project, possibly use a ducted fan as propulsion. thanks, Steve.

If you are referring to K7 then there is a MyHobbyStore plan here:

I think Speedline do (or did) a K7 kit. I'm pretty sure Sir Malcolm died of natural causes.

Steve H. The problem I am sure with the bluebird for EDF propulsion will be the very small front air inlets; They will not let in enough air to be blown out the back.

You would have to upsize the inlet AND outlet somewhat to achieve any efficiency or performance. This would, in effect mean dickering with the entire boat dimensions in order to keep the boat looking right.

Or at least thats what I think! If I were to consider making a Bluebird for EDF, I would start off with a large (full size) line drawing, and then get my pencil out. The EDF frontal area needs to be replicated ( at least) by the inlet ducts as the boat will not be going very fast (compared to an edf aircraft) and thus there will be no ram-air effect until you are moving very fast. Unfortunately, you need more power initially, to get clear of the water and that is precicely when you will NOT have any ram effect due to the low forward speeds.

I could fancy something like that. It would be a challenge to incorporate all the necessary mods and still keep the right look and of course get some performance. Ashley

Thanks Ashley, the way to go would probably be a standard surface drive or even a submerged drive like a multiboat setup. ducted fan sounds like a lot of agro for very little gain. I havent made up my mind on the nex build quite yet, Keep you posted. Steve.

Most seem to use a surface piercing design, and if you came down some weeks ago you would have seen Andy`s Bluebird going, for inspiration.

I am sure he will be happy to show it off if you express an interest on my "todays boating" post.

                        Hi Steve

Cash permitting you could fit one of these model jet engines.

                        610.jpg

It produces so much thrust that your biggest problem will be keeping the boat on the water and stopping it from becoming airborne.

                            Ashley

I would love to play with one of these engines and a hull made from some exotic materials (no not hardboard) but before buying one I would have to buy a convenient lake to use it on. I can just imagine the comments from fishermen and barge owners if they found themselves sharing the Bridgewater with a high speed screaming banshee.

As for buying one I don't know how much Mr Freshney is paying you for your articles but it would take more than just a few of my scribbling's to afford this piece of kit.

Apologies to Steve for hijacking his thread

No worries Paul, I saw an american built ,mystic 5000 tunnel hull with two of those jet motors!!! you would need an inland sea to run it. 100mph plus. and about 10 grand. For the moment I think ill stick with the boats ive got. MTB has a serious weight problem i am trying to resolve and the speed boat has a prop selection issue. Any ideas? Steve.
