Evening all, my father is is starting to build his second MTB from plans from the "other" model boat magazine this time round he has had the plane enlarged by a 1/3rd which makes it about 1:24 scale at 38 inch long, It is now wide enough to carry 3 motors and props. I recently bought a book Higgins PT Boat by David Doyle which is excellent for showing details of these boats. In it, it shows the 3 props of PT 625 being of all the same hand. now usually on a two prop boat you have them of the opposite hand spinning in opposite drirctions to each other, whats the rule with three ?

Gary, I dont think there is a rule as such, just guessing, but the PT boat props may all go round the same way for economy and speed (of construction)..ie, the motors were all the same and so to make one prop go the other way would have meant another set of gears?

For a fast model, there should be a handling benefit by having the two outer props differently handed, or you may like to keep it original and overcome the little handling quirks buy rudder twiddling and/or having permanent offset ballast or rudder set. This would be more fun I am thinking, especially in reverse when the difference will be more marked…

Must be a million bods out there who have done it both ways and will be flooding this post with wisdom (arguably) <everyone argues about something like this>

            Just had a thought!

A model with only one prop attracts the same question!

            Which way round?……..lol…..eh?

Simple answer is : "The motor needs to rotate in the correct direction to suit the propellor."

On full size high speed boats contra rotating props prevented the craft from running in a constant long arc called 'twist' and also helped reduce cavitation in front of the rudders.

The problems of twist dont manifest themselves on model boats (the exception being straight runners) so the handing of props isnt critical.
