I am just about to embark on the scratch build of the flatiron Gunboat HMS Arrow. Can anyone please advise the best way (and materials) to model the hull plating? I am building a wooden hull and thought I would need to glue on the plates. It will be a static model only.
      Thanks
      Dave

          Hello Dave

This is the method I`ve used on my models…….

Thick strips of card, with rivets popped through from the inside with a blunt centre punch and glued with PVA
          Then painted
There`s more examples in my galleries

            Hi David,

at which scale are you working?

If it is a static model, I’d use paper or thin card to do the plating, this is what I do on my RC sailing models, it’s cheap and easy to glue with white PVA glue.

Do you have a shell plan for you project?

I wouldn’t put rivets on, unless you are working at scale 1/24 or even bigger, rivets are often overscale .

            regards,

            Laurent

Hi there, with regard to plating; there are 2 methods which I have used successfully>>

One is to use printer card, which has been pre-sprayed with undercoat paint and then glued onto the hull using watered down PVA glue & that was used on HMS Daring build which is shown in the photographs.>>

The other method of assimilating plating on a hull is to use 0.5 mm thickness of Plasticard and this is glued onto the hull using superglue.  One of the drawbacks with using superglue in vast quantities is to remember that one must be in a well-ventilated area and also when placing the plates into position there is very little time if any for adjustment of plates.>>

I did try a product from a company called 5Star which was their answer to an odourless contact adhesive, similar to the Evostik/Bostick type of contact glues.  The problem I found with this was that you could peel the plates from off the hull quite easily, even though I have followed the manufacturers instructions to the letter.  Even going as far as roughing the contact faces up between the hull and the plates.    Not very successful.    I would have used the Evostik contact approach but both the fumes and smell from the contact adhesive is no good for me chest/health – and everyone has to be very careful using glues like that.>>

Pics attached – hope this is of some help.>>

Thanks for the responses. The scale is 1:48 and yes I do have a plating plan. When using card do you overlap them or should you avoid this?

Yes, you have to do overlap the strakes (IN, OUT, IN & OUT) , just like in real life.

                  Regards,

For an adhesive you could try Super Phatic from Deluxe Materials. It looks like a thin PVA glue and is water soluble but acts like a superglue in many respects. As it is thin, a little goes a long way. No odour either.
