      Hi,
I have been trying to get a ship’s wheel that is 10mm diameter.  My first thought is to use a readu made one but this size seems a bit too small.  My next thought was to buy a plastic kit that had a ship’s wheel of the correct size but haven’t a clue what to buy.  My last thought is to make one, but at this scale I am unsure how to go about this.
      Can anybody help me?
      Regards
      Edward

Edward, what sort of vessel is this wheel for, and what sort of material is it supposed to be representing…ie, a wooden traditional twirler, or a steel one etc etc  ?

10mm is very small and a slice of something…eg bamboo, or pipe, plastic or otherwise would do with plastic spokes and such.

Ashley, thanks for the reply.  It is for a 1/48 model of HMS Thetis, an early T class submarine (1939) which had a steering position in the conning tower.  Lokking at photographs I am guessing at 10mm dia.
The photos I have seen are not very clear and I can not see the material.  I guess that it is probably steel, due to the wet nature of such a boat.

I would say it would be steel.

Plastic rod (thin) might be a good choice as this could be held down in position and then brushed with plastic weld to be fixed together.

Bit tricky at that size!! i wonder if a bit of creative thinking might be applied…such as scoring the wheel into very thin  clear plastic and then painting it over with grey (or whatever) and then wiping off, leaving the paint in the grooves?? A bit of matt clear varnish to remove any shine and hey presto!

Ashley, thanks for your thinking!  Your first suggestion sound the best but, as you say, size is the thing.  It will be a bit like watch-making but fortunately I have a fairly comprehensive workshop (but without the real ability!).  Anyway, Iwill pluck up my courage and give it a go.

                  Hi Edward,
you may have answered your own question when you mentioned watches, have a look for anything clockwork ( Bootfairs, Skips ) and you may find what you are looking for.

Or you could try 10mm plastic or brass tubing. Simply cut a slice off and you have the basics done. just add the rest with rod of some type.

Hi,  10mm is a bit big (handles stick out) but I take your point. Thanks.
                      Regards, Edward

I can supply a white-metal casting of this wheel at 10mm outer dia of wheel plus 2mm handle each side if this is of any use . You will find this item under JRH 86 in my on-line shop . http://www.johnrhaynes.com

If you look on my site at the Upholder sub in Portfolio you will see the type of wheel carried .

                            Hello Edward,
I only build miniatures, so a 10mm diameter wheel is enormous for me.    I made this one in 20 minutes from tinned copper wire.    If I had taken more care, it would have been a lot neater and I could have had twice the number of spokes if I had wanted to.    The process was quite simple and I took 5 photographs showing how it is done.    If anyone cares to send me their e-mail address, I can send the pictures.     It is a bit laborious putting them in the album and then moving them here
