      Hello all,

New to this forum and the world of boat building.

For Christmas my wife bought me the Virginia 1819 wooden build kit by Artesania Latina,

The instructions seem limited in this kit so I am looking for some advice on what glues, rubbing down kit and wood finishes you all think I should use, and any specialist tools I should invest in.

I look forward to the challenge of the build just need a few pointers before I start

      Many thanks

      David

          David,

I managed to find this build log on the modelshipworld site. Although the build is not completed, there is quite a lot of information.

                Hello David,

Yes, a PVA wood glue (or an aliphatic resin glue) of some kind should be your main tool for this kind of model. Supposing you intend to build it as a static model, it does not really matter whether or not the glue is water proof (to the extent that PVA glues can ever be completely water proof), as normal humidity in the air is not very likely to make your model fall apart on its shelf …

As for what brand of glue, there are quite a number available out there. I have no personal experience of the one you linked to, but have heard nothing against it either. You'll find several more brands of wood glues for example here: **LINK**. I'm sure they will all be fine for the type of build you are planning here.

If the model includes plastic or metal parts that need to be glued to each other, or to wood surfaces, you will most likely also need a couple of CA (cyano acrylate) glues, also known as super glues. Again, there are many brands, some of which you will find here: **LINK**. I would suggest getting at least a thick one and a thin one; the medium varieties can be useful but not as often, I have found. Thick CA is applied to the part before it is set into its place, while thin CA is extremely useful wherever you are able to apply it using capillary force, i.e. first setting tyhe piece to be glued in its place and making sure it sits tight against the other surface, then applying a small drop of glue to the edge of the joint so that it is sucked in under the part by capillary action. For CA glues, I would also heartilly recommend that you get some Flexi Tip CA applicators — these can be put onto the tip of the bottle, and allows extremely fine dosage of CA which can otherwise tend to go a bit all over the place. Also get a bottle of debonder (or some acetone. which is tyhe main ingredient of debonder), as you will so0oner or later glue your fingers together or a part to a finger. If you then just try to tear your fingers apart, you will leave skin of one finger tip on the other one, wheras a few drops of debonder and 15 seconds or so will dissolve the glue joint and liberate you with no ill effects to your skin.

Good luck and lots of fun with your model!

                /Mattias

I am confusing myself on the best filler to use for the hull, as a balsa wood that will be unpainted and only finished in acrylic clear satin varnish which I think is ok, so I saw this filler **LINK**. is this ok or is there better options? Many thanks for any advise.
