      Hi,

This will be the first boat I have built.

I would like to know what size brushless motors esc I require.

      The hull is 32" / 81cm length

      The shafts are 4mm diameter.

      I have 4 blade props at 38mm

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Regards

      Simon

          Hello Simon

Welcome to our pleasant little hobby and I hope that this is the start of many happy years of model boating.

As this is your first build may I ask why you have opted for brushless motors, this isn't a trick question and there isn't a right or wrong answer I am simply curious about the thought process.

The Brede is a nice boat and will make a lovely model looking forward to seeing some photos.

          Paul

            Hi Paul,

I have a vosper fire boat although I didn't make it I did fit the graupner 600 motor.

With this one I thought I would see what the brushless motors are like just curiosity really!

I will start a build thread for it. I'm still pretty new to all this so expect to see a few questions from me!

Have you asked Models by Design? Andy should be able to advise you. After all, he's built at least one more Brede than you have!

                Hi Dave,
Thanks i just realised i probably asked a stupid question without thinking of the obvious! called Andy and have been advised on 580-600kv at 12,000rpm just in case anyone looks at the post in future.

Simon. Brushless motors are just motors that have no brushes, and perform as per their spec with regards rpm and power, so unless you had a boat fitted with a brushed motor and changed it to brushless there is not much to "see" if that makes sense. Brushless motors are smaller for their rated power than brushed so it is easy to marvel at the new found speed of your boat despite the titchy motor, but then you are probably not substituting like for like with regards motor characteristics.

                  The 600Kv and 12,000 rpm only make sense with a 20V battery…

Yes – I thought 12,000RPM was a bit quick for props that big. I have a Turnigy 2836/11 750kv to try in one of mine, using a 32mm 3-blader. I reckon on a 3S pack (11.1v) it should be about right for a 24" single screw launch. Two of those in Simon's lifeboat might be a good place to start – maybe even on a 2S pack initially. **LINK**

It is all trial-and-error at the moment with brushless motors but the more we try then the better we'll get at getting it right! It's not as if a tenner apiece is a huge investment for motors.
