I retired some 4 years ago but still keep my 'hand in' and read the science papers and journals to maintain a professional competency. Just recently there was a breakthrough announced in battery technology which could, that's could change all our current battery formulations.

This link will take you to a recent report in the RSC Chemistry publication in which it describes the aluminium based battery.

Super-fast charging aluminium batteries ready to take on lithium …

What is astounding is that the Al based battery will give similar or even higher voltages compared to other types but the charging time is in minutes, and not many of those.

Who knows when this might come into being, watch for news.

Hi Kimmo,Odd programmes I watch from time to time include "The Gaget Show "where they announced the new batteries for phones .They stated they will charge in one minute and that they will be safer than lithium.

From what they said they expect them to be smaller and go to higher voltages .

          Looking forward to future applicationswink

As I see it, the two most encouraging aspects are that they have a very long life – over 7500 discharge/recharge cycles – and use readily available materials – Aluminium, chloride and graphite – suggesting that they should also be cheap and cost effective for energy storage. Provided the effort is made to develop them into a commercially viable product, the market for them could be vast – think of all the PV panels on houses that can't store surplus power at present for example.

This is the sort of battery technology needed to move battery powered transport and anything else on… with the sort of low cost/low weight and very fast charge capacity, electric cars become a reality. One can only hope eh??

AND as for yer humble model boats, well…

Could be a problem for those who rely on lead acid batteries for ballast!

                  Hi Colin

I agree that most of us use lead acid batteries as ballast, with the probability of these new type batteries coming though, the lead acid remains as ballast but not as drive cells.?????

Initaly i am expecting them to be V expensive, look at the drop in price of LiPo's in the last 12 months, once the market has evened out the price and availability will fall dramaticaly
