How do i get the correct angle for the prop shaft to motor as i cant seem to get the correct angle witjhout chopping out half of the hull .

Hello Andy

Although I haven't tried this before, I would draw the motor and coupling area on a piece of cardboard and cut it in half where the assembly meets the hull and take it from there?

Let us know how you solve it, as it's always a tricky problem

I use a 300mm long drill bit set at the correct angle and just drill through.

I cut a slot in the hull, to the width of the prop shaft, and approx the right length as judged by eye, and then offer up said propshaft through the slot to connect to the motor and see how things lie…what is your hull made from?? Is the motor already mounted in place?? what sort of hull??? pictures??

Hi Andy .Like most people starting out I had trouble setting out motor to prop so I bought a Heavy Duty Coupling and the best tool I have bought to set up motor to prop,its a Protorlign(universal alignment tool).

Method .find centre lign.Place motor mount and motor on surface to be used to mount the motor(s) where you want the prop shaft to be. Use the protorlign tool on the motor and the shaft together to the tool and slide the lot forwards to the hull botton and mark where the shaft meets the hull.Drill a hole and open to aappropiate size This system I found foolproof. I have 2 Protoligns as I am building a Tug and have been given a second tug which has twin motors which allows me to set both motors up together. Purchase justified. Both items can be had from Mobile Marine Models,you can see their products on their web site and good luck

Many thanks to all for the great advice and will try both Ahley;'s and Paul's meathod and see what turns out best apart that is from a few weeks in a psch ward !!!!!! I seen a stalwart on You Tube the other day and was much impressed by the crane . Any one know if Italeria are going to bring out another version of the brtish MTB ??

ALSO.. I would use a double u/j, if space permits, as this will allow for some misalignment. Plasticene is useful for holding bits in place. I would get the approx angle this way and then mount the motor, then the propshaft..holding in place with a few drops of superglue.

Then you could apply a 1.5V battery to the motor and see if everything is ok.. no obvious vibration or wobbly bits. I find that you would need to have lightly oiled and adjusted the shaft correctly first for this test.
