Lipo battery question

Hi All , One of my 3S batteries as a cell down completely flat ,it will not take any charge whatsoever ,the other 2 cells are in perfect condition showing 4 volts per cell and there is no swelling to the outer case at all. Do you think it would be ok to use it as a 2S battery if i disconnect one of the balance wires from the dodgy cell so the alarm is not triggered by the bad cell , it is only 2 months old and i bought it at a show so have no proof of purchase .

No. Don't muck about with LiPo packs. If there is a label on the pack then you might contact the supplier with a photo of it and a brief note of the circumstances.. A reputable one will acknowledge your complaint and might even replace it without the need for a receipt.

If not then chalk it up to experience and dispose of it safely.

Hi Dave

Messing about with LiPo batteries is akin to kicking a big bloke in the privates …….your not sure how he will take it but you just know it won't be very healthy for you.

Yes, only use LiPo if that is the only way to get the power to weight ratio you need for your boat.

In most scale applications NiMH cells are perfectly adequate.

Hi Guys

I have been looking at LIFE op batteries they seem to be safer than lipo' s has anyone any thoughts on them?

There is nothing inherently unsafe or unstable about LiPo batteries. If you mistreat any power source then it could turn round and bite you. Many modellers have for years been abusing battery packs by overcharging or over-discharging them; by using motors which draw excess currents from them; by physically abusing them or neglecting to store them properl or, where, appropriate, keeping them topped up. NiCAD and NiMH cells are perhaps more resistant to this type of abuse than LiPo cells, mainly because of the sheer amount of energy stored in a LiPo pack. If you abuse a cell with a high energy density then its ultimate demise is bound to be more spectacular. My point is that it's not the type of cell which is the risk – it's more the type of user.

Yes that was and is a great help thank you.I think I will go with the LiFE op batteries as I want my models to live a long life!! and not burn through my miss handling.most are buillt from plastic sheet and or balsa/ ply.
