This is somewhat of a departure from Aeromodelling for me and my first posting on the Model Boats forum….

Having been a long time friend of Graham Ashby…our new editor of Model Boats, he thought i needed a new challenge and something that didn't involve model aircraft. So the suggestion of why not try a model boat for a change and come up with a free plan for this years Model Boat Special, wasn't too long in coming…

Just to make it a little more interesting with twist of complexity Graham suggested a simple drive under submarine….. so here it is….. a simple drive under scale model of Red October Typhoon class Sub.

Overall length is 36" and the beam is 4.5"…..more pictures to follow.

Hi Tony and welcome to the forum. Yes, editors can be like that. It looks very good I must say. By drive-under you presumably mean it is a dynamic-diver….diving under throttle.

It would be nice to see a few more snaps especially of the stern drive and the fore-planes. Its funny but without a reference in your picture, one would assume the sub will be massive (as per the real thing), but 36 inches is a fairly modest dimension.

Have you had it in the water yet??

            Hi Ashley,

Yes dynamic diver……It has been tested and redesigned a few times!….I followed the original full size version with twin screws outboard of the rudder and found rudder control was useless…. It has been ballasted for both a boat ( sits at correct height above the water) and for diving where it has to sit much lower in the water than scale….

Tony. I think it is a fact of life that driveunders have to be ballasted very low to work.

I fitted a small hatch to my Perspex lid to turn the radio/power on and off, and also ventilate the inside after a dive, as my motor gets very warm in the confines of the hull and what with a few drops of seepage from the tube, it mists up quite well.

I can honestly say guvnor, I had nothing to do with antagonising the current UK/ Russian spat just to get interest in my latest creation wink …..however you're right Ray…I alway like to be topical….

I may have to generate the same sort interest in my new Concorde project….
