So the plan is to make an airboat, may be some kind of hydroplane. But all I know about motors stems from the infamous mabuchi 540 plus an 8.4v nimh battery. It’s all bit experimental so I need to keep costs right down. My question is…. Will a cheap standard 540 be powerful enough to get a hydroplane – planing?

There have been articles on Airboats in the magazine, notably in the September 2009 issue if you can find a copy. Alternatively you can look at the digital version here: http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article/go-faster-airboats/5139

Hi James. No point in buying a cheap 540 when a 28mm outrunner of 1300Kv or so will cost only a few quid more and deliver all the performance you could want on your 8.4V battery. Look on e-bay, often there are packages for motor/esc/prop adaptor and prop for very reasonable rates.

Or get some Styrofoam and do this….
