Ok so today my grandpa brought a model boat called the southern star and he was wondering what type of boat it is for example, is it a galleon or something else? and also any history on the boat?

I checked google and the name "southern star" is quite a popular name for a boat/ship and it's seems to have put any history this boat/ship may have out of the way since google put's the popular results at the top.

My grandpa used to be in the royal navy which is why he would like to know more about the boat, below are some links with pictures of the boat he brought, I would really be thankful for any help because I'm stumped right now.

          Hello James,

Although it is of course possible that there was an actual Southern Star that this model is intended to represent, for my part I would be inclined to say that the model is not based on any real-life prototype, but rather a generic/fantasy 19th century man o' war. The model is rather typical of the sort that are mass-produced to be sold as decorative objects, rather than intended as a scale representation of a real ship.

This should of course in no way detract from enjoying it – if your grandfather likes it, that's all that's needed!

          /Mattias

            Hi James,

From the photos I don't think it is meant to be any particular ship. To be honest it looks like an ornamental model of the sort you might find in tourist shops. It is certainly not a scale model as such and does not really appear to depict a a galleon or any other type of sailing ship.

As you say, the name is a common one and may have been chosen because it sounded nice.

If your Grandad likes it than that's good but I doubt very much if there are any historical associations attached to it.

            Colin

Yes it has to be an ornament, but there is LOTS of information on here – http://www.ageofnelson.org/MichaelPhillips/ – of RN ships in the 100 years before the beginning of the steam age. Sadly, nothing "Southern", but a few "Stars".
