          Hopefully not.

Somebody suggested Shippy MacShipface but it was concluded that this would not sound good on the radio.

All very amusing but I do think ships should be dignified with something appropriate really.

It has also been commented on that those who have supported the entertaining name are likely to have a vote on the EU exit….

I wold be ashamed to sail in a ship with a name like that! sad One of my old ships, the passenger liner Transvaal Castle, ended up with the name Big Red Boat III, the ultimate indignity!

Times change, maybe we should reclass the 100-gun battleship Victory, as the 100-gun Battleboat Victory!

And have Royal Navy vessels all re-classed as Warboats!. Naturally, the Flying Scosman will have to be reclassed from steam locomative to "Puffer train," or "choo-choo train!" sad

              Well said, Colin!

              I agree entirely

Now!……..Who better than our forum members to suggest a name of our own?

              How about……….Charlie Brown?

              That's CB……,Radio talk……..Touche!

              How about……..Ocean Rover?

Selecting a ship's name is almost as difficult as selecting my next build!

And to think it was only included as a joke. Might be the laugh is on them. They have said they are not bound to using the name chosen in the vote though, so hopefully common sense will prevail. Made me laugh though.

I see that 'communications' manager James Hand, who suggested the name, has apologised profusely on Twitter. When you read some of the other suggestions you might be forgiven for preferring Boaty McBoatface. Examples quoted include "Ice Baby Ice" and "Notthetitanic". Sometimes I wonder if the world is being taken over by the vapid, self-absorbed nonentities who inhabit Twitterland.

As Colin says, these people also have a vote. That's not in the least bit amusing.

I fear that, whatever the final name chosen, it is quite obvious how the ship will be referred to 'affectionately' from now on.

…nevertheless, I still feel happy to live in a country where situations like this are possible…

I agree with your last paragraph dodgy geezer……if some had their way all our choices in anything would be ruled by European parliament and our ships named after the corrupt dinosaurs that have prevented the publication f proper accounts of the EU for the past umpteen years……I must be one of the unintelligent that wants out, and the sooner the better.

Sorry, m'duck, but 't was you who first mentioned it.

For myself I would rather not know which way anyone intends to vote and, as you say, I can already get a bellyful of prejudice and ignorance from the newspapers and TV.

Perhaps you should lock this thread before unpleasant things are said. They would already have done so on MBM!

Regardless of politics and just as DG says I am very glad that I live in a country where this kind of thing is possible.

DG is also right that, no matter what its ultimate name is this particular vessel will always be known as Boaty McBoatface.

It certainly has all the making of many marketing and promotional opportunities.

Perhaps this slightly comical notoriety will help promote an interest in the projects that this ship will be involved in and possibly rekindle a public interest in ships. But whatever happens the ship will always raise a smile when she puts into port.

ps Dave I disagree about locking this thread, we are all grown up on this forum and quite capable of accepting another persons point of view without resorting to hysterics .

Dave, my comment referred to the sort of people who jump on these 'bandwagons' without thinking, not the merits or otherwise of 'Brexit'. Bit of mission creep there…

Actually, unless they do adopt the ridiculous name it will soon be forgotten by most people as there is not much general maritime awareness on the part of the Great British Public these days as Bob quite rightly points out.

HOWEVER, the submersible ROV it carried WILL be called Boaty McBoatface. Possibly it should be Subby McSubface, but lets not split hairs.

It isn't a "boat" though – it is a "ship!" Sadly, to most of the British public, anything that floats is a "boat" even if it is over a quarter of a million tons!face 24 If I had been in authority in the Royal Research, I would not even have allowed the submersible to take the name!

I have never heard of a "battleboat" or a "74-gun boat-of-the line." One of my old ships, the 33,000 ton passenger liner RMS Transvaal Castle, was eventually (after being sold foreign), painted bright red and renamed "Big Red Boat III!" The final indignity for a fine ship!crying
