hi all, just turned on the tellie box to find a great program on Yesterday channel about building the new aircraft carrier plus other great boats. On now but might be on catch up too.

Well, that was an amazing insight into an amazing ship. Who'd of thought all the old ways would come back in such an awesome way to build a very innovative ship.

It is incredible that something that big can be made in sections to weld together.

When I build something from Lego the bits never seem to match….

After watching the programme, I am unsure about the drive system of the vessel, diesel electric for low speed and gas turbine for high speed. All that co2 etc, would a nuclear installation have been better in a ship of this size as is the case with the large carriers of the US.

A decent programme on PBS America @ 22:10 tonight (and repeated later), Civil War Sabotage, about the sinking of the US sternwheeler Sultana with a heavy loss of life, far more lives lost than the Titanic.

                Hi Andy

Thanks for the heads up, thankfully Jane had seen that the programme was on and has recorded it.

A very informative programme and will be a big reference aid to my long term project of designing and building a large scale model of this amazing ship.

CO2 is not an issue. It's plant food, and it's not causing temperatures to go up – temperatures are actually dropping even though there is more CO2 in the air nowadays…

                    Hi Dodgy

CO2 is an issue and we cant hide behind speculative theories such as those that take the Clarkson route of assuming the climate models are wrong or that the climate itself is somehow self levelling.

Whilst it is true to say that global temperatures haven't changed over the past fifteen years it is also true to say that, as a species we have dumped 100 billion tonnes of carbon into the global atmosphere between 2000 and 2010 (which amounts for a quarter of all CO2 put there by humanity since 1750) and the forecasted quantity is to double before the end of this century.

The real problem with CO2 as a greenhouse gas is that it has the capacity to raise the temperature of the oceans which in turn will trigger the release of billions of tonnes of Methane currently held in suspension in the lower depths of the oceans.

The release of huge quantities of Methane will have a devastating effect on the climate and has the capacity to raise global temperatures by between 4 to 6`C.

For those who don't know about the problem that Methane poses just Google 'methane time bomb'

                    Paul
