I tried to download the technical details from Rolls Royce website but the link is broken. Basic data is on the webpage but I was hoping that more details would be in the pdf leaflet :

So its an underwater outrunner, where the prop blades are on the rotor.

One for either a small milling machine or 3D printer.

I thought it would be an inrunner, the outer casing is static, it's the bit in the middle that goes round?

Hi Colin,

I'm sure it' an out runner with the blades attached to the motor's casing. The basic frame of the unit seems to be holding the ends of the armature static. If it is then it answers one question I asked elsewhere on this site. Has anyone ever seen an 'industrial out runner? I think you have!

Another question I asked was can BM's be run run submerged and the answer came back from all the forum members 'yes the can'!

I think you have found something here with great potential for model boats, small BM's, and ingenuity. Shame you couldn't have patented it. Well done!

Ah, I hadn't appreciated the structure of the unit properly! I suppose one of the key features would be to ensure that the exposed components are corrosion proof. It would certainly be interesting to see if it could be scaled down though.

It belongs to a group of units called Rim Drives so it can be described as an outrunner.

When used for main propulsion the system offer lots of advantages over a traditional shaft / propeller / rudder system.

Have to disagree. It's an inrunner cos all the static electrical gubbins are on the outside. The bit that goes round is on the inside. Hope everybody likes this

Very interesting but diffficult (not impossible) to reproduce for model boats. Convinced Colin has found the right idea and expect to see some one having a go very soon!

Thanks for the video link. I have to agree with you except in your conclusions. The Chinese are by far the main producers of model-sized brushless motors but they won't switch on their machines for less than 10,000 units. The model boats market just would not support that quantity of product, particularly when there would be demand for so many different sizes. If any do appear then they will probably be produced in Eastern Europe and be prohibitively expensive for all but oligarchs or hedge-fund managers………………… You read it here first.

Hi Dave,

You got me wrong! I am very sure the multinational electronic companies would eat (trying to be polite) the job in seconds flat if they saw any commercial benefit. I was talking about me making one in mi workshop!

Bunging blades on an outrunner seems a no brainer and I'm sure someone will make one soon. A centreless armature (prop) is a bit more difficult but someone will do it. The impressive thing about this forum is all the inventive dooers!

Hi Paul,

Welcome to my club! I've never even physically seen one yet but the writing on the wall gets bigger day by day. Decided that when I take the plunge it will be for an outrunner for no other reason than the concept is totally foreign to the few brain cells I have left!
