Len, I think outrunners are a fairly new idea. I'd never come across them either until relatively recently.
I struggled with heavy brushed 400 and 600 size motors in model aeroplanes and only had success with motor assisted gliders. Then suddenly rare earth magnets in outrunners appeared. Initially they were very expensive and needed even more expensive speed controllers but they've become really cheap in the past 5/10 years. Coupled with light Lithium Polymer batteries they've transformed electric flight to the point where there are more electric models on the flight line than glow or petrol powered.
The advantages of compact light weight motors and batteries isn't such a big deal for model boats, particularly scale, but I guess it'll come eventually.
