Hi Everybody,

Just browsing the site and clicked 'features'. Then clicked on the drop down menu for build features. Not a lot came up until I clicked on the picture at the top of the screen that again said build features with a forward pointing arrow. All of a sudden a whole list of interesting projects appeared.

Scrolling through them I found Roger Suitter's NR1 submarime model. It is excellent! However I don't think the importance of this sub and what it did is explained in full.

Hence the reason for this post. For anybody that might be interested read 'Dark Waters' by Lee Vyborny & Don Davis "the NR-1 America's secret submarine" ISBN 0-09-188566-3. It will curl your toes!

Hi all

I am currently sitting on the full build article for NR-1, minus the actual operational part. Roger moved house in 2013 /2014 which meant that everything stopped until 2014, but he is now making it into a fully working submarine. The on the water pictures in that 'readers' models' article were staged. Once I have the operational part , it will be in MB asap.

Dear Paul,

Excellent news. Can't wait for it to appear! I do hope the article brings out the amazing history of NR-1 (as well as all the model details). It will be a classic issue!

Hi Len

Yes, it is all done as far as possible, and Roger was/is building the dive module in 2014 and of course the props (and their motors) are in the moveable stern dive planes which is an interesting conundrum to resolve. The batteries are inside the sealable external scale keel, all in line ahead.

Anyway, once Roger has got it all functioning and I have that 4th part of the article I will include in MB – I thought that readers would think it strange if they didn't see a working model, working as it were, so hence the delay.

Submarine sterns are always a problem, too many waggley bits wanting to pass through each other! I do like the idea of batteries in the keel! Brilliant. Ballast in the right place and easily accessible. Can visualize a sub with two keels. One on charge and the other doing the job. I shall ponder this matter further!

I don't think there is anything wrong with publishing an article about an ongoing project. The reader then becomes part of the journey and looks forward to the next installment. The older 'Model Maker' and 'Model Engineer' did it all the time. It creates no end of correspondence about the problems encountered and those which need to be solved. It is good to get the audience involved.

Publish!
