I would like to get hold of some of the patterned safety foot plate material (as seen on Shemarah II) but I can't think what it is actually called. It's for a few strategic areas on my Yorkshireman which is 1:48 scale. what's the proper name and where can I get some?

          Chequerplate or safety tread plate.

          Google search comes up trumps.

The checker plate which is a series of diamond shaped blobs is called…Durbar Plate

Not that it matters to us!

I found some scale chequerplate (Slaters Plasticard OO Embossed Plasticard Chequerplate 4mm) but what does the 4mm indicate – how does this relate to 1:48 scale?

00 scale represents 4mm to the foot or 1:76 scale

This means that the chequer plate you have located has been manufactured for 00 railway sets and at 1:76 is a little to small for your required 1:48.

However Caldercraft do supply a 1:48 white metal chequer plate that might be more suitable.

Try googleing 1:48 chequer plate and see what pops up

                I hope that this helps

                  Hi Paul,

I got the chequer plate for Shemarah from Kit Form Services. They do a range of patterns but all nominally 1:24 scale. It might not look too bad on a 1:48 scale model. (**LINK**)

I tried the Slaters Plasticard version but either they sent the wrong size or I ordered the wrong part number and the sheet that I received was much too coarse a pattern, probably around 1:6 or thereabouts. I did not send it back, just stuck it in my might come in useful one day box.

There is a Chinese company call Lion Roar who make a vast range of superdetailing parts and they do several photo etched brass sheets but I think the nearest scale to yours would be 1:35 They use the description anti skid plate if you want to search for a supplier.

The photo etched brass version has the advantage over plastic in that it can be bent round very tight corners by scoring it and then folding it over a sharp edge like a steel rule.

                  Regards

                  Gareth
