I recently bought the latest Model Boats Special Edition and would like to convey my thanks to all those who were responsible. I stood in Smiths debating whether to buy it, and I'm so glad I did. I still haven't finished it but have thoroughly enjoyed everything I have read so far- just wish there was more of it!

What has struck me particularly is the quality of the writing- consistenly erudite and often witty, and I think we are very lucky to have such knowledgable contributors- especially as much of this knowlege can be tapped for nothing on this forum as well.

Being of a certain vintage myself I liked the Celebration of the Sixties, and seeing those Laurie Bagley covers bought back the excitement I felt as a teenager when Model Boats dropped throught the letterbox. I wonder, as there is interest in this era, if there could be a regular slot in Model Boats for a vintage plans article- I'm sure many would love it. Just a thought.

Once again, well done Colin and the rest of the team for such a splendid effort.

Ian, I can only agree with your comments re: the Special Edition.

Near the end of the Celebration of the Sixties item I couldn't help but notice one of Vic Smeeds designs, an excellent design of a Portuguese patrol launch – Antares. Colin has kindly sent me a copy of the plan and I will contact him for a copy of the written magazine item, when his workload has eased.

Ooo er. I dont think I used a plan?? I did do a sketch to scale to see where the bits might fit, and ensure the tank well was big enough for a tank and so on.

In any event there are some changes I would make if I did another one (and we may be knocking up a few at Bushy Park next year to celebrate D-Day) regarding motor location, battery storage, rear deck area and watertightness thereof, rear underwater profile and rudder arrangement. This would need a build before committing to a paper plan!

Have you considered the possibility that drawing up a landing craft could be challenge for you, given your years of experience on site and your skill in sketching out solutions to on site problems I would think that the drawing up of a landing craft would be right up your street.

I loved the special too, and in particular your contribution Ashley! It's these oddballs that add so much more colour to the boating pond.

too bad the Ekranoplan wasn't made flying, but then again that would have involved complicated controls and a very skilled pilot on the sticks as the WIG effect is a pretty unstable one.

I liked the James May being knocked by the geek very much as well!

                      Cheers,

I am thoroughly enjoying the special too. We are currently away in our caravan for over 5 weeks, and the magazine is with me so I can read it in detail. Well done to Colin Bishop and the team.

We are in the Central Highlands of Queensland right now, enjoying the beautiful sunshine, and the company of our latest grandchild, a boy aged 3 weeks – as well as his 18 month old sister and their parents.

                        Peter.
