Hello Captain Bob

Not one of mine and judging from the sunshine the Paul who is building this model is a lot further south than I am. As I look out of my window I can just see a tall pointy pile of lattice ironwork peaking through the frost on the glass.

Hi bob,

Thanks for comment, your right Paul T, I think it was September in this photo so probably in the mid 30’s at the time!, minus 1 now!

As this is my first scratch build I have made a few mistakes so far, like forgetting to build the frames higher than the build board, which required a later mod to lift it 100mm clear, and choosing 2mm ply to cover the hull which has been a nightmare to get the forms of the hull correct (especially the nose!). As I could only got marine ply delivered to France in max of 1.2m lengths I’ve also had to splice in the last 200mm, which was not ideal, but after sanding/filling etc you can’t seem to feel the joint.

I’ve just got the 2 props to put in, as I still haven’t sized the motors yet I went for M4 (6mm OD) 350mm shafts so hopefully this will give me a wider choice of propellers etc when I finally choose the motors.

Next step is fibre glassing, however as it does not seem to need the strength I was intending on using a polyester resin with nappy liners as I have a nasty reaction to glass fibres due to being asthmatic!

Any obvious potholes I’m heading into, please shout up!

Oooooooops!………I think apologies all round are in order here!

I thought Paul lost in France was Paul T!………but I also think that Paul T has had a part in this!, by not clarifying the situation earlier on!

Anyway, I`m sending Paul T to Coventry…..For a short time as a sort of punishment!

Now then Paul, lost in Feance, I don`t recommend fibre glassing…..Nasty stuff!…..Just paint it. inside and out

What type of boat are you modelling?

Well I have arrived and now Paul is lost in Coventry…..

I've been here since 3pm and haven't got a clue where you have arranged for me to stay I hope that the period of banishment is for more than 12 hours as I am tired after the trip and hopefully can enjoy some of your famous 5 star accommodation.

Meanwhile I am sleeping on the beach and the tide is coming in.(I did say that I was lost)

I asked you what were doing in France and the reply was quite plausable

This is almost like a Brian Rix farce!

I going to blame the medication………Er, just a minute…There`s no beach at Coventry…..That`s the canal!

I'm definitely on a beach so this can't be Coventry…..I went down the M6 and turned right at Dudley and drove for 110 miles (I thought it was a bit far) until I ran out of land.

I am staying at the Belgrave House near the pier but I don't know where I am.

Paul LIF. Could try eze-cote and tissue. Water based very easy to use and not smelly at all. Not quite as tough as ordinary resin though.

Its actually an extract from my favourite latin book Treatises on Friendship and Old Age by Marcus Tullius Cicero

'Hours and days and months and years, neither does past time ever return, nor can it be known what is to follow. But whatever the time is given in which to live, we should therewith to be content with'

No I don't pretend to understand all this latin stuff its just bits that I picked up but the piece on friendship has a deep meaning for me.

Didn't do Cicero much good though as his 'friends' had him executed. But people always did say he talked too much….

Bob, most Western European languages have their roots in Latin and many Latin expressions survive in the English language – Caveat Emptor or Buyer Beware for example.

When speaking Latin as the norm……How did our language get a hold?

There must have been a transition stage over hundreds of years…..Hard to imagine

It's all very complicated Bob. Originally, following the Roman Conquest, only the Romans and the Romano British aristocracy would have spoken Latin. The population at large would have spoken some local dialects, perhaps Celtic based. Then over the years there were invasions by the Vikings, Danes and Saxons who all added to the mix. After the Normans invaded in 1066, the language of the aristocracy became French which also brought with it Latin root expressions. Then of course there was the influence of the Christian church. Amazing we can still understand each other really….

I find it amazing how the Welsh language survived too!

The border must have been a real division of nations and Wales must have been totally isolated, no sign of Latin involved as far as I can make out?
