      hi looking for some info on tug motors/prop set up .i was at a tug- in a few weeks ago and my tug ran out of power half way round the course.so i am building a new tug for next years comp and would welcome ideas for a good powerfull and reliable system. the hull is from mmm and called nangee,some of the tugs had 12volt car fan motors fitted and 12 volt gell batteries is this the system i should fit .this was my first go at towing and the set up i have is not ideal at least its no good for the job i want it to do.regards sammyk

          SammyK. How big is this tug and how big a prop would be fitted?

          At the risk of repeating myself, the good old MFA800 is cheap enough and turns a 50 or 60mm prop at 12v easy enough, or gear an 850 2:1 for spectacular prop turning power…65mm plus or so in size. Others like I believe the 900 series motors.

          A 12v 7Ahr gel cell is ok for this sort of thing, and doubles as ballast.

          Do you want to WIN or just build a tug that can compete now and then ???

            hi ashley good to hear from you hope all is well.the boat is 28"oal and has a beam of 9". i think i still have a lot to learn about tug boat towing,i was teamed up with a good skipper who helped me ,when my boat ran out of power he pulled us both out of the course turned the whole thing round and pulled us back to the finish line so i feel i let him down .we did not win but we were not last so next time i want a boat that can do the job to compete now and then .regards sammyk

              Hi Sammyk

              28in is small enough for a Johnstone 900 series geared down 2:1 with a 50mm 3 or 4 blade prop to produce huge pulling power and give you a decent showing for any event.

                An 850 will power a 50mm prop direct.

                ALSO see my post on a 555 driving an X50 prop (not claiming the same stump pulling power, mind).

                I told you some like the 900`s !
