I'm building a small yacht and the plans for the sails call for this paper.

Is Mylar the same sort of thing and has anyone used this before?

How thick should it be and was it fit for purpose?

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

      Regards to all

      Mike.

          Hello Mike

I`ve got a 50" yacht with film sails, professionally made and the material measures 0.005" thick

It must be available on open sale somewhere………Normally, I would have nicked it from work!

          It`s called draughting film

If you are stuck, simply use a piece of pillow case!

          Bob

            'Morning Bob

Thanks for the swift reply………I mentioned your comments to she who must be obayed and was sent off with a big flea in my ear. No help there then.

This has left me thinking……pillow case….should I go for a plain colour, a check, stripes or just a plain old fashioned white one?

I found some sail makers on the internet so will make some 'phone calls today.

            Regards

            Mike.

For what it's worth, I have found ordinary poly cotton good for scale type sails. It comes in a good variety of colours and looks nice if finished with seams in a contrasting colour. They can be made flat and work quite well.

It is possible to get Egyptian cotton which is often recommended, but I haven't used this, although I have some stashed away!

What is the yacht? It would be interesting to know.

Sea Drift(Monica hull) on maiden voyage in the eighties.

This is a photo of a yacht built years ago with poly cotton sails.

Mike. For what its worth, when i built the sailing Triumph Herald, as a complete sailing novice, I used ripstop nylon for the sails. This glues very easily with fabric glue (dries transparent), which will be sold in the same shop. Same shop should also sell thin nylon string for rigging and all manner of useful fittings.. hooks/eyes and so on..

Worth a trip to a haberdashery shop. The range of material available is quite something, and you may even find something in a nice floral print, just to brighten up the pond a bit!

Mike, you could try this address, their fine sail material is quite cheap and they'll stock other items that maybe needed.

                        Good morning fellow boat builders.

Thank you for your replies. I spoke to Frank from Nylet Sails for well over half an hour and he's put me on the right track. Drafting film can suffer with creases not coming out so he has recommended "Scrim" and to make the sails for me for about £40.

I still want to have a go myself though for "Moonbeam" & "Cariad" as can't afford £300 per set of tailor mades.

Ian was asking what the yacht is……It's a " Racing Sparrow" length 770mm,beam 175mm,height 1371mm

draught 326mm sail area .25m2 bulb weight 1.3Kg.

I found the book "Build your own R/C Yacht" in our library and it had a set of plans in the back. When finished it'll pop in the boot of the car fully rigged…..a bit different to a 3 stone Tug!

It's a plank on frame and I'm really enjoying the build, watch out for photos……..Any one familiar with this little yacht?

                        Thanks again chaps

                        Mike
