I’ve been trying to design my own custom pirates of the Caribbean style ship, and I can’t find a kit anywhere! I have found a few kits that are close, but they would need a bit of tweaking. I have taken two years of drafting in highschool, and I was thinking about designing quite a few small pieces to go on my ship to make it a true “pirates of the Caribbean” ship. I know you can get 3d designs printed at websites like http://www.kraftwurx.com  but have any of you guys tried to truly customize your model?

          Ahar Chris lad.

I see ye be a SERIOUS modeller ! I suggest that you will have to STEAL a ship model that most suits your vision of “the black pig” or whatever (Captain Pugwash) and then will have to customise it to your requirements.

Almost everyone customises their models to some degree, things like own choice of paint scheme, pennant numbers , flags or just adding crew and crates of fish to a standard Billings kit or whatever, these are all customising things.

As the structure of the ship will be much of a muchness regardless of it being R.N or pirate, perhaps partially building the model of your choice and then standing back and deciding what to add next might be a plan.

Personally, I would have an idea in my head and possibly a few sketches of the sort of look I want , and make it up as I went along, there not being. Plans however well drawn never match up to actually seeing the model “in the flesh” as it were.

Or at least thats what I would do, not that I am noted for following ANY sort of plan.

Ahar two Chris lad (and Ashley),

This is the type of steal Ashley suggests.

The “Del Prado Kit” of the Bounty, a monthly 100 part issue, was given to me by a disillusioned owner struggling to make the build. Good job he didn’t get to the rigging ’cause the total lack of coherent instructions makes it virtually impossible to build unless you’ve experience of period ship rigs.

Here’s the finished item, sails set etc. The whole is driven using a simple 400 series 6V motor. We intend to use her for the children’s “have-a-go” events. Yet to be sailed in any wind, and I fully expect to have to shorten the courses’s and maybe the top sails too.

The build was also to demonstrate how to make the rig removable for transport and “work in progress etc. See my Album, Bounty Del Prado, for shots of her with and without various masts.

Next plan is to introduce a firing cannon – ideas are already being formulated about a medium sized spring loaded party popper, firing a single black 1″ diameter light rubber ball!

PS When given this kit I also got the next in series, “Cutty Sark” now what could I do with that I wonder? All suggestions should be kept clean!!

              Ahoy there Kimo.

Thats a PROPER JOB you have there. What can be acheived with a bit of black cloth and a skull-and-crossbones stencil !!

Suggestion for Cutty sark, a diorama…you know whats coming…dry dock, box of matches…

                Well m`hearty Kimo.

Just re-read your post , and the firing ball thing… Hobbys do “dense polystyrene balls” in various diameters including one inch. They are expanded polystyrene but as advertised, very dense indeed. Virtually no weight and reasonably hard. Would be a good missile for a party popper, having almost no weight and thus energy to inflict death dealing wounds on unruly children…sorry…pirates. Or use marbles, on reflection..
Disney did a pirate ship to go with their Peter Pan film a few years ago..similar size to the playmobile one, but much more ship-shape. Found one cheap and my 1/32 scale pirates look great on it. (It floats to boot)
