Very interesting indeed and in my view a real gem.

The obvious practical knowledge that has gone into this makes me wonder if it was built from a plan.  I have a number of early 20c Model Engineer volumes and in these it discusses the practical side of model boat design – keep the centre of effort of the sail plan low (ie low aspect) for stability, the disadvantages of internal ballast over a drop keel but using a deepened hull to compensate, rudder enhancement and sail profile for lateral stability.  Perhaps the foremast had a removable topsail?

A joy to see – keep us informed about your progress with her – please.

Anyone else out there snared by Kate or other sisters?

          Cap”n Jim,

Thank you! If you have a look in my album, you can see what a sorry state I got her in. From speaking to my parents I think this was probably built by my great grandad and from the state she was in it was halfway through being restored probably by my grandad (who build Betsy).

I will keep you posted on her progress, as she has been an absolute joy to work on. I have placed a new deck on her and am in the process of putting a ‘false’ deck on her – sorry, will upload some photos and that will explain all.

Unfortunately due to my course I can only work on her sporadically, so it is going to be a while until she is completed.

Thank you again for your post – and I am glad that you like both of my girls!

Here is where I am at the moment – and I have no time to do anymore!

            Hope you like it

A large rudder will be required to overcome the length of the keel

Pond yachts were straight runners and not designed for turning, I would fit an nice auxiliary motor……………Contrary to many sailers opinion…………..A motor is a nice feature, especially in calm weather

              Just my opinion……….Bob

                Hi David and Bob,

I think your right Bob.  I am fitting an auxilliary to my SB Emma for the same reason to get me out of trouble when my skills aren’t good enough to keep me a way from the reed bed… Incidently I’ve been bulding her for over two years – so David you’re no different to many of us!

Look forward to the installements when they come.

                Cap’n Jim.

This is my prop arrangement, as fitted to my Britannia and is ideal for finding the wind!

                    Bob and Jim,

Bob – great to hear from you – thanks for your help with the previous project.

I hadn’t planned to have a prop – but I am seriously re-thinking that due to my lack of sailing experience. Thanks Bob with the prop arrangement, was wondering how to achieve that! Looks great.

Will keep you both posted (might be a while….) but watch this space!

                    Thanks again

                      Bob and Jim,

If imitation is the best form of flattery…

It still needs a lot more work – but I have to head back to university, so could not spend a lot of time on it!

Hope this finds you both well

                        Well, it`s a start!

For the next picture, I expect to see it all blended in, smartened up and painted!

And a brass prop for effect!

Dear all – I thought I would blow some dust off Kate and endaevor to get her finished:

Next step was to get her rear-end sorted! So with a couple more layers of filler/ sand she is now looking something like this:

A lot more filler and sanded down

                          Re-coating

…. and yes that is my other project in the background looking a bit neglected!

I have just moved to Gosport and want to get her out onto the glorious boating lake – hope to see some of you there!

                          David

It's been a while, but whilst I nurse a belly full of Turkey I thought I would up-load a picture of 'Kate' in all her glory at present.

The next part is to test and fit all of the electronics!

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.

                            David
