Cyano glue deteriorating

Does anyone know if cyano glue in the bottle deteriorates and loses its strength with age?

I keep the unopened bottles in the freezer and only purchase the smaller bottles, because once opened and in use, the cyano does seem to deteriorate in the bottle. It seems to be a bit like mustard – they make their money from what is not used.

So, in practice, depending on the model in hand, I will open a new bottle, whether it be thin, medium or thick viscosity for that model’s construction rather than use an ‘old’ bottle.

Also, the named branded ones do seem to be better than generic unnamed ones and I have found that with some cheap versions, the thick type is not really thick.

Having said that, they all stick your fingers together very well!

It tends to go thick and solidifies after a while once it has been opened. Unopened shelf life in a cool situation can be up to a year or so but it does eventually go off.

It is best used fresh.

Thanks Paul and Colin. I do keep the cyano in the fridge (with permission!) which seems to preserve it well but I have not tesetd its strength . Been there about a year now. After hearing from you it is time for a test before the next boat.

Even if it starts to deteriorate, it can sometimes still be effective when used in combination with an accelerator. Spray one piece with accelerator, let it dry, then place in contact with the cyano-surface of the other piece. But be quick and steady!

Now that is a good tip and worth a try. Of course, hitting the right spot first time is often a tough thing to do!

Being allergic to Cyano i have to use alternatives most of the time although I can tolerate the odourless version to a certain extent.

There is always another way!

I have found that the CA lasts about 6 months once opened, usually going to a thicker more viscous fluid before it becomes unusable.

I keep it at the bottom of the tool cupboard in the garage. The weather in Melbourne goes from a few nights down near 0c in winter to some hot days in summer exceeding 40c, but mainly between 8 and 30.

There is also the more frquent issue of it hardening in the nozzle sometimes requiring careful clearing with piano wire if sticky, or even drilling out from the inside if it has hardened.

It seems to best to only buy when you want to start a new mode or need a new bottle, and there is no economy in buying a bigger bottle if you don’t need it.

Having said all that it is still a far cry from the days I used PVA and araldite (5 minute or overnight). You can do a lot more in less time.
