Try net curtain material and dye it to the colour that you want.

decent haberdashery shops usually have a delightful selection of sailcloth, rigging string, rope, net, scale sacking, beads for mast ends…the list goes on.

I have purchased red/white striped sailcloth for a pirate ship, Brown stripey stuff for a DRAKKAR, rope for same (dyed with tea), and Green camo netting (looks like stretchy string vest material) for a gun emplacement. This last looked particulary good after I cut out odd shapes of green/green/brown felt with pinking shears and stuck them on.

Bead shops should not be overlooked either.

              andy,
I have sourced some genuine fishing net for you should you want it.
It is “shrimp” fishing net and has a mesh of 3 x 8mm diamond with 1mm thread and comes in cream, but will dye in anything from dirty water to Dylon dye colours.
It costs £4.00 per kilo off cuts and £10.00 per kilo off the bulk.
The supplier is Boris Nets, of Copse Road Fleetwood, and is the proper pukka fishing net ideal for a 1:12 scale model.

If you want me to take a pic of an off cut I have then pm me with your email address and I’ll send some.
They actually do 2 sizes, with the other size a fraction bigger. This is proper DEFRA approved “shrimp/prawn” net, and not toy stuff though, and if you intend to trawl with it, is strong for it’s size.
              neil.
